Rainforest of Sumatra

The German monthly newspaper ‘GEO’ says that recently the population of orang-utans has been declining both on Sumatra and on Borneo. The problem is that these primates love the fruits of the palm oil plants making local farmers consider them as a potential threat to their palm oil plantations. Thus they shoot at least the grown-up orang-utans to prevent that any damage could be done to their plants. The orphaned young ones then are left behind.

“Tagesschau” says that due to the heat at the moment several fields on the island of Sumatra are threatened by multiple small bush fires that local farmers try to get under control in order to save their harvest.

Did you already know? According to a German newspaper named “Focus” scientists found out that the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan which is native to this very rainforest actually is able to develop plans for the future. These scientists have filmed wild orangutans for a longer timespan and some of this footage seems to show the male head of an orangutan-group showing his companions where they would travel the next day. Afterwards these monkeys started to scream very loud as if they were trying to scare away predators and other orangutans they could meet on their upcoming journey.
