Music Personalities

Music Personalities

Date: May 18 2021

Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

If you see a man in cowboy boots with a big hat and belt buckle, how would you characterize him? Would you guess that he listens to hip hop, jazz or country western music?

Or how about someone dressed all in black with a purple and pink mohawk and lots of piercings? What kind of music would you think this person listens to?

Every aspect of your physical appearance gives others clues about your personality. As a result, we stereotype people based on how they look and what we guess about their personalities.

But how accurate are these stereotypes? Does listening to gangster rap automatically make someone a gangster? Is everyone who listens to punk rock a rebel or an outcast?

Watch the first minute (or more if you want) of this video about music stereotypes.

Dialog

1. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

Announcer

Mike

Announcer:  Alright, this is Kay Swensen. She’s a senior at Lakeland High School, and she can easily be stereotyped as ‘that girl who listens to reggae and hippie music.’ Lovely.

This is Nick Runt, he’s a senior at Lakeland, and he can be stereotyped as ‘that kid who listens to jazz music and wears all black.’

Jake Horn, he’s a senior at Lakeland and he listens to pop and emo music.

This is Mike Santella, he’s a senior at Lakeland…

Mike:  He likes scratching his shoulder.

Announcer:  ...and he is that metal kid who doesn’t wash his hair very much.

Alright, this is Kate Kasslater, she’s a senior at Lakeland and she can be stereotyped as a feminist kind of chick.

Billy Gierd, he’s a junior at Lakeland and he, you know, listens to hardcore [??] music.

This is Alan Brown, he’s a senior at Lakeland and he listens to hip hop and rap.

Discussion

How much does the music you listen to describe who you are? Apparently, a lot!

A study affiliated with the University of Texas found that the music you listen to provides a lot of insight into your personality and general behavior.

In general, people who prefer classical and jazz music tend to be more calm and reflective in their daily lives.

People who listen to alternative rock and heavy metal are usually more rebellious and intense.

Fans of pop and country music are often more positive and upbeat.

And fans of hip hop, rap and electronica are more energetic.

What’s the relationship between your musical tastes and personality? Take the Music Personality Test to find out.
