Lesson

Have you ever seen the word "baby" at the end of a sentence?  Do you know what it means?

Usually people use "baby" to sound a little bit cooler.  It's also usually used as a joke and if used correctly, can make other people laugh.  I'm not sure where it started, but it's used quite a bit.

If you've ever watched the Austin Powers movie, you have heard this happen.  Austin likes to use "baby" to seem cool and laid back.  He uses it a bit too much.

Always use a comma before the baby.  For example, "I love English, baby!"

"Baby" literally means a child 0-2 years old, as most people know.

Boyfriends/girlfriends/husband/wife/partner sometimes call each other "baby" as a pet-name, which is pretty common for younger people (teenagers, 20's, 30's). For people born in the 1960's or earlier, it is less common (they are more likely to use "dear," "honey," "sweetie" and other words). That's why you will hear things like "Why don't we go out tonight, baby?"

Women never call men "baby" unless they are romantically involved. Some men (probably the less gentlemanly) may refer to women as "baby" if they are interested in flirting, even if they are not romantically involved (yet). This is when you will hear like "How you doing, baby?" Some women don't like being called "baby" by strangers, so it's okay to say "Please don't call me baby" (it will send the message that you're not interested in the guy).

It doesn't happen very often, but when people use "baby" at the end of a sentence without being for romantic interest, it's because it sounds a bit cool (like the lesson explains). Like.. "Hang on tight, baby" when they're about to take you for a ride in their new car or something. Not everyone can say "baby" and make it sound cool, though. That's where the joke comes in.. if someone uses the word "baby" knowing they won't sound cool, they probably did it because it would be funny.

Also, sometimes people use it at the end of the sentence when they're celebrating. Like if you someone was just told they won $100 from a contest, they might say "Yeah, baby!!!" even though they're not talking to anyone in particular. I think that is the most similar to "English, baby!".. it implies that you're excited about English. Like if I suddenly found out I'm going to Japan (my favorite country), I might say.. "Oh my god, I'm going to Japan… JAPAN, baby!!!" (to emphasize that i'm excited about Japan). It's not too common, but it is used sometimes.

And that concludes my explanation of all the ways "baby" can be used.. hope it's not too confusing!
