A "pet peeve" is an English idiom that describes something that really irks or bothers you. In English, we often use the word "pet" as an adjective to describe things unique to a person.

A pet peeve is also unique to a person. It is possible that no two pet peeves are exactly alike.

My personal pet peeve is the sound of fingernails scratching a chalkboard (see photo). The sound really irks me and makes me want to jump out of my skin. I don't like it. My girlfriend's pet peeve, on the other hand, is when someone talks while chewing. While everyone can agree that talking with your mouth full of food is bad manners, it definitely irks some people more than others.

Other common pet peeves are people who talk too much, people who are rude, or people who talk on their cell phone while driving.
