Tanis and I went to Seattle last week for business. One of our appointments was canceled so we decided to visit Safeco Field, the home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a key!

Zach:  So, what’s up with this breaking and entering I heard about up in Seattle?

John:  What are you talking about?

Zach:  Um, there were reports of illegal trespassing at Safeco Field. Does that ring a bell?

John:  Uh…. vaguely…

Zach:  What did you guys do?

John:  We had been passing back and forth past Safeco Field, you know the new stadium for the Seattle Mariners? And it’s really cool because it has this retractable roof that when it’s sunny, the roof pulls back, and when it rains, the roof covers it. And so I was checking it out from the freeway all the time, and, uh, so we had some time to kill and I asked Tanis if it would be cool if we went over to the stadium. Just to check it out.

Zach:  Was it hard to get inside?

John:  Uh… maybe for a common person, but, for Tanis and I with our jungle-gym skills…

Zach:  Your ninja-like abilities?

John:  It wasn’t too tough. We found a parking place and we tried a couple doors and they didn’t work, and all of a sudden I could see Tanis’ wheels spinning. She was looking up at the rafters and the way the crossbars were being connected to different levels and she was talking about, you know, walking across them like balance beams to get over to certain areas and I was like, “I think we’ll be able to find a different way.” So, we were walking around and we found this one gate over in a far corner that had a, like, a six-inch gap between it. And so we looked at it and Tanis said, “Oh yeah, I can squeeze through there” so she jumps up on this railing and squeezes through this thing. And then I jump up there, and I can’t quite get my chest or my ass through that gap. Then we found another gate that I could climb up over. And so then she and I are just walking around, we were wearing nice clothes and stuff so when the guys came driving by in their little carts, you know, the maintenance guys, we’d just smile and wave and they’d just wave back at us.

Zach:  Did they just assume you guys were, like, sports agents?

John:  Yeah! ‘Cause we had our cell phones, we were calling people, we were like, “We’re in Safeco Field!” and they thought we were agents or something, just walking around.

Discussion

This conversation is a little fast, but I was getting excited telling my story. Hopefully you can follow what happened. Tanis and I don’t usually sneak into places, but a huge stadium like that is pretty cool, and we really wanted to see the inside when no one was there. Do you have any stories of sneaking into a place? Maybe a concert or a game? Tell us about it at the Life Goes On message board! See you next week!—John
