Hi Friends!
One way to travel in a city is by taxicab. Taxicabs can be called, “taxis,” or “cabs,” and are special cars, with a driver to whom you pay money for taking you to your destination.
In the conversation below, Joe hails a taxi and asks the cab driver to take him to the airport. Before Joe heads out of town, he wants to get something to eat, and he asks the cab driver to recommend a good place.
Cabs buzz around the city all day, so you can often get great tips on fun places to go from a cab driver.
Check out Joe’s experience below!

Joe

Joe:  (Yells) Taxi! How you doing today sir?

Cab Driver: Good, good, good.

Joe:  Uh, you know… I’m, I’m just trying to figure out… Well, I need to go to the airport, but before I go to the airport there’s a couple of other places I’d like to go. Can you suggest any places to go eat?

Cab Driver: Yeah. There’s, uh quite different places to go eat. There’s, uh Japanese, Chinese, there’s French, there’s African, Ethiopian food… Um, there’s Italian food. It all basically kind of depends on what type of food you like, but I can make a suggestion of a Japanese restaurant called, uh, “The Hokkaido,” and they serve, uh sushi, and they’re located up on Sandy boulevard. There’s an Italian restaurant on Southwest Macadam Avenue that’s just off the downtown Portland area. That restaurant is “Mazzi’s.” Good Italian food, fresh from that day. Italian food that is the bomb. Bomb of the city!

Joe:  Hey that that sounds great! You know, I was I was wondering because I’ve got to go to the airport; what would be the one that would be… which restaurant would be the closest?

Cab Driver: Uh, the closest one to the airport, uh, would be “The Hokkaido,” the Japanese restaurant, and uh basically, from downtown I can get to “The Hokkaido” for like, twelve dollars and go from there.

Wow! That cab driver could really talk! It just goes to show that cabbies know their way around town!
Joe had his choice of many different restaurants, but he chose the one that was on the way to the airport. He knew that eating near to the airport would save time. It is good that this cab driver was familiar with the city, and could help Joe make that decision.
If you want to take a cab ride, here is some useful information:
Taxis are usually a bright color, often yellow. They almost always have writing on the sides of the car that let you know they are cabs. There is also a light box on the top of the taxicab. When the light is on, the cab is available. When the light is off, the cab driver already has a passenger.
You can wait in a taxi-stand to have a ride in a cab, or you can hail a taxi by standing on the street facing traffic, and raising one arm when you see an available taxi coming toward you.
When the cab driver pulls up, open the door, get in the cab and tell the driver where you want to go!
Good luck, and don’t forget to ask the driver about sights worth seeing!
Your Friend,
Tanis
