Learning the American Accent - Lesson 3

Learning the American Accent - Lesson 3

Date: Dec 13 2012

Topic: Pronunciation

Author: andylu2

Lesson

It's the small and common English words that are actually the most important to learn when it comes to mastering the American Accent.  I'd love to hear from you guys what you think of these pronunciate lessons in the comments below.  If I get a good response, I'll keep going.  I love to teach if I know people are learning.

This lesson is about "to".  Everyone knows how to say this word, but most non native speakers have no idea about how differently it sounds in different sentences.

The "to" in "Going to play" sounds much differently than the "to" in "Going to the store".  I'll explain exactly why in this video.  "To" is one of the most common words in the English language, and it's used in so many  sentences.  If you want to learn to pronounce words like an American native speaker, you need to learn this lesson well.  Try out this lesson in this free:

You'll love it!

Please remember to "Like" this lesson if it helps you and please share your thoughts in the comments.

Thanks

Hi Andy, in my opinion the most difficult sounds to pronounce are  [w], [ð] and [θ].

Besides people learning English have problems with short and long sounds too. It seems to us, it doesn’t matter while pronouncing words, but for sure it’s important to use the right sounds as the meanings of the words  differ.

Hi,

I am from India and I feel that my written, spoken English are good. But my accent is poor and I sometimes find it difficult to understand few native speakers. I found your accent lesson is very useful. Could you please create few more accent lessons with more regularly used English words?

Moreover, if could create some difficult lessons for listening skill improvement, it would really be helpful to me.

Good work. Keep up the good work.

Thanks

Hi Irene, I’m curious, are there any specific words or sounds that you’d like explained?  I’ll be happy to make an American accent lesson on that.

Thanks again Irene.  I guess I just mean that I appreciate hearing that people are using the lessons and you are finding them useful for improving your American Accent, among other aspects of the English language like slang for example.
