Sugar is everywhere. Seriously, everywhere. We add it to coffee and tea. We add it to cookies, cakes, and jam. You might try to use it in moderation. Maybe, you’ll drink a black coffee today or resist that cookie after lunch. But cutting it out completely is almost impossible. Why? Because of all the hidden sugar in foods.
What? Hidden sugar? That’s right. There’s sugar in ketchup, in bread, in yogurt, and in salad dressing. Many healthy products actually have sugar in them. Because of this, sugar overconsumption is a problem. Eating too much sugar has side effects like weight gain and bad health. All these things put sugar in the crosshairs nowadays.
Jessica is worried about the risks of eating too much sugar. Can Andy make her think twice about her fears? Listen to today’s English lesson to find out.

Jessica: So, Andy, I’ve been reading about sugar lately…
Andy_H: Here we go.
Jessica: I am actually considering cutting it out of my diet completely. I know it sounds crazy, but I’m learning about all of these really scary side effects to sugar.
Andy_H: Like the withdrawals, or the addictive nature that sugar can cause?
Jessica: Exactly. And overconsumption, that’s the scary thing. I started reading labels of foods that I eat all the time, and I can’t believe how many hidden sugars there are.
Andy_H: Yeah, I understand that sugar is kind of in the crosshairs nowadays. Everyone’s trying to turn it into the next diet enemy. All I have to say is, all things in moderation. I get it, there are associated risks, and I always check to see how much sugar is in the products I buy. But you have to remember, sugars can be natural, aka fruits.
Jessica: That’s true, but too much fruit can affect your metabolism in a negative way.
Andy_H: Just like too much macaroni and cheese can really blow you up. But, like I said…
Jessica: That’s true.
Andy_H: ...all things in moderation.
Jessica: Yeah, maybe I need to think twice before I cut it out completely. There are some foods I just can’t resist. Ice cream, sometimes.
Andy_H: Chocolate.
Jessica: I know. Well, alright, I’ll think twice. But I am definitely going to cut it out quite a bit.
Andy_H: Not a bad idea.

Discussion
Jessica and Andy are talking about sugar. Jessica is thinking about cutting it out of her life completely. She read that there are many bad side effects to sugar overconsumption. Also, she was shocked to realize how much hidden sugar is in all the food she eats.
Andy isn’t that worried about sugar. Since there may be some risks from eating too much of it, he only eats it in moderation. Reading food labels helps him understand exactly what he’s eating. He tells Jessica to think twice about sugar. After all, fruit has sugar, but it’s still a healthy food.
How much sugar do you eat? Is it addictive for you?
