John: I saw the freakiest preview on Letterman last night.
Tanis: Oh for what?
John: For that new Nicole Kidman movie I think it’s called “The Others?”
Tanis: Oh I saw that movie last weekend and it..
John: You did?
Tanis: Yes! And I don’t even like scary movies, but, um, this, I read the reviews and it sounded like not only suspenseful, but intelligent and so I was intrigued and I went to go see it and it was awesome, but I did have my face hidden for probably three quarters of the movie! (Laughs)
John: I can’t believe you saw it. I just watched the the trailer…
Tanis: Uh huh.
John: It was only about a minute, but it was so scary I couldn’t sleep that night.
Tanis: Are you serious?
John: I told myself I was never gonna see that movie. I can’t handle that kind of thing.
Tanis: No! It is a good movie. It’s not, it’s not the kind of movie where you go see it and then you’re just freaking out for three days afterwards, scared at your own shadow and stuff. It’s not like that. It’s more like, it’s intelligent and it’s a suprise ending that makes everything seem okay.
John: So answer this: Did you have trouble sleeping that night?
Tanis: Not at all.
John: Huh, well, maybe I should check it out.
Tanis: You should. I recommend it to everyone. I thought it was great.

Discussion
The Others is about a mother raising two children alone around the end of World War II. Her children are allergic to the sun, so she must keep the house dark. One day the servants at the house vanish and three new servants appear. Then other strange things start happening, like spooky screams and things that go bump in the night. The mother’s daughter starts to see and speak to ghosts. Slowly the mother begins to question if their house really is haunted.
Maybe John will go watch the movie The Others after Tanis reassured him that it’s not too scary. In the conversation above, Tanis focused on how intelligent the movie is and the fact that it wasn’t as creepy as she had thought. However, she did confess that she hid her eyes through some of the scary scenes in the movie!
What is your favorite scary movie? Which part makes you scream or shake the most? I’d love to hear about it on the “Movie Madness” message board.
Have a great week! See you next Wednesday!
