England has a great history of filmmaking, but it’s somewhat uncommon for British films to become huge hits in the U.S. – especially if the films are not starring Hugh Grant. There are some exceptions, such as Trainspotting (1996), The Full Monty (1997), and now Bend It Like Beckham. Bend It is the story of a teenage girl named Jess (Nagra) living in London who must make a choice between following the traditions of her Indian family or pursuing her dream of becoming a soccer sensation.
Beth recently saw Bend It Like Beckham. Listen to her tell Miguel how much she liked it.

Beth:  Miguel, what are you up to this weekend?

Miguel:  I don’t know. I haven’t really figured it out. I think I might just go see a movie or something, but I don’t know what to see. Have you seen anything good lately?

Beth:  Oh my gosh! I saw the best movie. It’s called Bend It Like Beckham. And did you see Monsoon Wedding?

Miguel:  Um, I don’t think so, but what did, what was the movie you just said?

Beth:  It’s called Bend It Like Beckham and it’s the same director who did Monsoon Wedding, which I also recommend. But, this, this film Bend It Like Beckham is awesome because it has, um… it takes place in England and it’s about, um, a woman’s soccer team and it has to do with, um, just breaking down, uh, taboos and all kinds of social, uh, underlying meaning and it was just an awesome story.

Miguel:  So the, the “Beckham” is like David Beckham, like, the famous soccer player?

Beth:  Yeah.

Miguel:  So is the movie, like, about soccer, or, or you said a bunch of other things too, or, you know, what’s it really about? Who, who are the characters in it?

Beth:  Well, it’s about this girl who’s Indian, and she’s an amazing soccer player, but her family really doesn’t want her to play football. It’s more about, um, you know, her learning traditional Indian, um, things like cooking and being more involved with her family rather than being, um, interested in sports. And so, she develops this amazing relationship with, uh, another person on the soccer team as well as her coach.

Miguel:  Interesting. So, is it, it’s not a girl movie is it? I mean, I’ll like it, won’t I?

Beth:  Oh, you’ll totally dig it!

Discussion

Beth sure is excited about Bend It Like Beckham. She definitely convinced me that I should see it. It sounds like it’s a real feel-good movie, and I like films that make we walk out of the theater with a smile on my face. I don’t know much about soccer, so it will be cool to learn more about that too.
I’m going to see Bend It Like Beckham this weekend! Hopefully you’ll get the chance to check it out too.
See you at the movies!
Anna

China

Oh, how come I'm the first and maybe only replier of this movie which in fact is really, well, not bad!?

In fact, I saw it in one of my English classes which was taught by a Scottish loving old man – Ian. Of course, he came from Britain, and once was a BBC journalist (Cool, isn't he?). He is really nice, though he always wanted us to say something about our China's Cultural Revolution, but I guess he was well-meaning.

I seem to have been off topic. Well, I like this movie, in spite of the stereotype stoty line of dreams coming true, maybe because it's a movie recommended by one of my favorite teachers.
