Leading English education network revolutionizes, monetizes with fee-based personalized learning
Portland, O.R. - October 6, 2009
At this point, we are all very accustomed to creating the way we experience the Internet. We use RSS feeds to follow the news and social networks to keep in touch. So why is it that, until very recently, the roughly one half of the world that is actively learning English was left to sift through prescribed programs like Web 1.0 lemmings?
The new englishbaby.com has not arrived a moment too soon. The site's mass of free members--which exceeded more than one million earlier this year--can become Super Members for $5 a month and unlock the tools to essentially structure their own personal English class, all while staying connected to fellow students in every country on Earth.
"A Super Member's homepage is a blend of what you see when you log into a social network, and what you might expect an ESL teacher's desktop to look like," says co-founder and CEO John Hayden. "This integration lets the user strike a balance between social learning by communicating with peers and skill building through exercises."
The two even interact directly. In addition to the ability to save vocab terms to learn later, friends can also "blurt" vocabulary suggestions to one another.
Super Members see enhanced versions of the site's free daily lessons, which range from slang tips by celebrities to an ESL soap opera. They can ask questions of a live teacher and download audio lessons for learning on handheld devices.
And by using these features, Super Members populate a special rubric to keep themselves focused. In the new "My Exercises" field, they find customized suggestions on how to improve their English skills, from reviewing lessons they've had difficulties with in the past to drills testing them on vocabulary in which they've indicated an interest.
"Like any social network, every member profile on English, baby! is totally unique," says Hayden. "Our redesign makes it so that, for the first time ever, each can have an equally unique curriculum."
