I think one of the best ways to improve is to practice writing as much as possible and read. Reading may not sound very appealing, that's why it's important you find something interesting to read. Although, you shouldn't feel bad about writing essays, I been proof editing papers from men and woman who attented an American school their whole life and still not be able to write a simple essay. It is a matter of trying.
