Japan

February 20, 2014

if you go to shrine, you can notice a kind of rope that's Shimenawa that are made from straw of rice. this Shimenawa tells us the place is very sanctum.

from the end of the every years to new years, people decorate Shimenawa on the entrance of house.  that's why people want god to stay in their house. the end of the year, it's said gods go out and go to the one place. so people's house would be empty. people don't want it. god will give up to go out when they see Shimenawa.

this tradition is from Shinto mythology. when the god of the sun hidden in rocks the wolrd was darkness. so  other gods showed her (the god of the sun is woman)  dancing  and song. she noticed and attracted it and went out from rocks. other gods tied that rocks with rope made from straw of rice as she never return in there again.

old Japanese always used ropes made from straw of rice. people wanted to make difference between usual rope and Shimenawa. so they twisted rope in the opposite direction.
