My first blog post. Woo, I'll describe my vacation!

I just got back last night from the Outer Banks, in North Carolina. What a cool place! We went snorkeling, and I caught five calico crabs. They were angry and bubbling at me, and would bury themselves in the sand or snip at me as they scuttled away. We also were searching for shells, and one of them had a hermit crab in it! It was small and cute.

Most of the time, I just swam in the pool rather than the ocean. It's so salty, and the waves knocked you off your feet. it was hard to boogie board, because you couldn't even get past the first few waves to catch the next ones. I don't like the sand much, either. It gets into everything! There's no getting away from it.

The brown pelicans were simply amazing. Bird watching was just about as much fun as anything else. They would fly in diagonal lines, taking powerful strokes with their enormous wingspans. Then when over the water and about to catch fish, they would fold in their wings and dive-bomb STRAIGHT down into the ocean. I never saw any of them care anything in their pouches, though. The black headed terns were also amazing to watch. In the afternoon, while I was relaxing in the pool, they would soar above us and hover in the air. They would ride the thermals above our condo. Thermals are heat gathered throughout the day in the ground, and released as sections of hot air. The terns would ride it for as long as they could stabilize, then when they fell out, they would circle back around and do it again. It was so great to watch them enjoy themselves.

There were also sandlings, though I only saw one. It was dancing along the tide, running in to snatch up someof the colorful mussles that got unearthed by the wave. But it would never actually get in to any of the water. There was this really old looking seagull, who I doubted could even fly. It waddled away from me whenever I tried to get close for a picture. But it pretty much threw itself into the waves one time, and I got a few good pictures of that. It was really big.

Ghost crabs came out onto our beach at night. They blended in really well with the sand, and since you only had a flashlight to see by, you really couldn't even spot them until they moved. And by then you were screaming, because they scared you half to death. Hahah. They moved extremely fast too, one minute they were there, the next, they could be anywhere. I was just glad I didn't meet any that were too big, or I probably would've got pinched.

That's my animal report! I got a little tanned, but nothing major. Hopefully it'll fade soon. The sun here isn't nearly as bright as it is out there. Ohio is full of clouds!
