Why have the recent detentions in the Ergenekon investigation created a state of confusion among some circles?

Also, why have they caused everybody to start asking “What’s happening”?

A groundbreaking first happened two days ago: Those long considered untouchable were finally “touched.” Nobody had deemed it likely for two retired generals, former commanders of the gendarmerie and the 1st Army stationed in İstanbul, to be taken into custody.

Most were of the view that the operation would stop with retired Brig. Gen. Veli Küçük. This most recent bold step has thus turned the perplexity of long-time coup supporters into utter shock. They have become tongue-tied.

Apparently, they did not hear what they themselves said, particularly Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal.

Following the early-morning detentions, they kept trying to provoke the army all day, unleashing a volley of threats at those who had been saying, “Now it’s time to get at the coup planners.”

They even threatened the government, claiming that its end will be miserable, whereas they should have sought an answer to a very simple question.

With raids and detentions being carried out in military residences and officers clubs, would it have been possible to carry out such an operation without the prior knowledge and permission of the General Staff?

The General Staff issued a statement after the raids: “The searches in military facilities were carried out by members of the army with the accompaniment of a public prosecutor.”

The most important development that has taken place during the course of the Ergenekon investigation at this point is the decisive attitude of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in no longer condoning or tolerating the errors committed in the army.

Those who have panicked are confused, resentful and helpless because of this reality, which constitutes a cornerstone in Turkey’s uphill trudge toward democracy.

Indeed, what underlies Mr. Baykal’s disrespect toward the judiciary while the General Staff behaves quite respectfully toward it in this particular case?

In particular, what does Mr. Baykal’s insinuated threat against the major business tycoons of İstanbul mean? What did he actually mean by saying, “Let this operation be a lesson to the well-off circles of İstanbul”?

Can he possibly be covertly threatening them with by implying that there are people amongst them who provide financial support to Ergenekon?

The current picture is reminiscent of the people who had paved the way for the March 9, 1971 coup and who eventually bore the brunt of the consequences of March 12. If it is not so, why are certain circles so alarmed? What do their “Hitler” and “McCarthy” comparisons mean? Why are they so enraged? Was it not they who so enthusiastically desired to see the end of the notorious Susurluk case? Was it not they who collectively and continuously switched off and on the lights in their houses for a minute every night at 9:00 p.m. in protest against the prosecutors’ reluctance to pursue the case to the bitter end?

A single question perpetually suggests itself at this point: Do we want democracy or not? If we want democracy, we cannot take sides with the enemies of democracy; we cannot bolster them. The Nokta newsweekly exposed the planned coups named “Sarıkız” and “Ayışığı” thought up by former commanders of the naval forces and the gendarmerie.

The magazine’s revelations were not officially pursued initially, but these claims have been proven through documents. Well, should we just get over them without taking any action? Spain, Italy, Greece and South Korea are known to have convicted their coup stagers. Some South Korean and Greek prisons still have people serving time for plotting coups.

Should those establishing themselves as the state in Turkey, those who know no legal boundaries and who claim that nobody can do anything to them, simply be overlooked?

Is this what they are seeking? A prime minister had called the Susurluk case “idle talk” and a “trivial matter.”

He eventually saw how the case ended up. Unless gangs and all illegal formations are purged from the state, this country will never be able to establish a fully democratic order. What we are going through is a test of Turkey’s democracy.

Consequently, all of us should be calm, cool-headed and respectful of the trial process. Those who are trying to incite the military should abandon this negative behavior.

Land Forces Commander Gen. İlker Başbuğ dismissed claims that the issue of the coming detentions had been brought up at his meeting with the prime minister as “conspiracy theories” and called on the media to not wear out the armed forces.

“Aren’t these conspiracy theories designed to damage the unity and integrity of the Turkish Armed Forces and its chain of command?” he asked. Those who have been inciting the military and digging a grave for democracy are quite unsettled by the recent developments, which have frustrated their plans. Those who undermine the nation and belittle the public will are eternally bound to end up on a dead-end street, sooner or later.

Travel - German daily promotes Turkish Cyprus

German "Berliner Morgenpost" newspaper introduced Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as a mystic place waiting for explorers.

In its travel pages, the newspaper wrote TRNC has become more attractive after the Lokmaci gate (a pedestrian crossing between TRNC and Greek Cypriot administration) was opened, and tourism in this side of Cyprus has started to revive.

The German paper said tourists can see immense coasts and historical and cultural attractions in TRNC, and enumerated these attractions as a castle in Gazimagusa built by the Venetians in the 15th century, historical ruins dating to Romans and Christians, and buildings that belonged to the Muslims.

The "Berliner Morgenpost" said tourists can get their procedures done rapidly in order to cross to the north or south of the island.

In its travel pages, the German newspaper also informed its readers about places where one can stay in TRNC.

The Anthipanitis Church, the Bellapais Monastry, the Buffavento Castle, the Girne Castle, the Sourp Magar Monastery, the St. Hilarion Castle, the Apostolos Andreas Monastery, the Aya Trias Basilica, the Ayios Philon Church, the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, the Panaya Kanakaria Church, the Venetian Palace, the St. Mamas Monastery, the Kertikli Bath, the Grand Turkish Bath, and the Great Inn are some of the historical attractions one can visit in TRNC.

After Euro 2008, coach Terim faces tougher tasks ahead

Will coach Fatih Terim stay or not? That was the question every Turkish soccer fan was asking about the Turkey coach after he led the national team to third place in the Euro 2008 championship that ended over the weekend.

Now that this matter has been settled, the wisest thing to do now is to start thinking seriously about the 2010 World Cup that will be held in South Africa and the upcoming European Championship in 2012. And the onus falls directly on the shoulders of “Emperor” Terim, the man who loves hard work.

Turkey was drawn in Group E against Spain, Belgium, Bosnia, Armenia and Estonia in the World Cup qualifiers -- and the Turks play their opening match away against Armenia at Yerevan on Sept. 6.

The Spaniards, the reigning European champions, are rolling these days and only European No. 3 Turkey has enough guts to stop them from winning this group. So it’s almost a foregone conclusion: The battle for the top in this group will be between Turkey and Spain.

Qualifying with ease from this group will mean Turkey earning a berth in the 2010 World Cup proper. After having finished third in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and also placing third in the Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, third place in another major soccer tournament is no longer enough for the demanding Turkish fans -- they want the championship itself.

This makes Terim’s job all the more difficult because he has to form a team capable of taking world soccer powerhouses by the horns in the World Cup and in Euro 2012 two years later.

Terim's team at Euro 2008 is likely to form the nucleus of the squads that will challenge for final places in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. The Turkish team proved in Switzerland and Austria that its meteoric rise is no fluke. Fans can only hope that its never-say-die spirit at Euro 2008 endures

Speaking language of love, meeting in an atmosphere of love!

If I asked the first cloud I see, would it tell me / in which language it rains in Africa / does the wind talk about the distant places where it blows? / In which language do people hug in America?
Let my voice go ‘round the world like love / My siblings from beyond oceans, from Far Asia / whose names I don’t know at all / Merhaba (Hello) to you from İstanbul, from Anatolia!

Will we ever be able to say hello (merhaba) in Turkish to all the children of the world as in the Olympiad song, composed for the fifth Turkish Olympiad, which we quoted above? Why not? This is neither a fantasy nor an impossible dream now. No -- this is a legendary cause realized for the most part in a way that will go beyond our wildest dreams.

Would we feel the same joyful zeal if the language we are talking of were the language of war, diplomacy, economics or industry, as is the case with many languages? I don’t think so. What makes a language valuable is never the language itself. For this reason, it is the hearts -- hearts full of love -- of the nameless heroes who spread this language to the whole world that has made Turkish the language of love and which has made thousands of children from different religions, languages and colors love it and has made hearts enthusiastic when it comes to us.

But for the seedlings of friendship watered by the sacrifice and tears by the thousands of unknown Anatolian heroes who spread to all the corners of the world, having shouldered their bags laden with the words “love,” “loving tolerance,” “brotherhood,” “peace” and “altruism,” who would know the value of our beautiful Turkish? We are now seeing the reality that those fertile seedlings have become mighty trees and that we are witnessing a dream awakening. It’s such a reality that it’s more dream-like than the most incredible pink dream.

Please lend your ears to the voices of the black, white, yellow, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu children who sing our national anthem with their chests swelling with pride, who joke with one another in Turkish, who share their joy and sorrow with our songs and poems by feeling them in their hearts at least much as we do. This voice, which other lands hear from their children through us, is also the reflection of this nation’s coming back to its senses and to its essence by rediscovering itself.

What a nice and reviving reflection this is. The first Turkish Olympics was participated in by 17 countries, the second by 21, the third by 42 and the fourth by 83. It’s the words of love that emanate from the 101 countries that participated in the 5th International Turkish Olympiad and that fill our ears with that lovely echo.

As many as 101 countries; thousands of children, and tens of thousands of families… The common denominator is all the human values that promise a new vision of peace to the world and which finds its representation in Turkish. Love, dialogue, loving tolerance, mutual assistance and solidarity...

In the hearts of these children, who are growing up with the consciousness of serving all of humanity -- only love, tolerance and good intentions are settling. And our beautiful Turkish now functions as a translator for these enthusiastic hearts beating with love.

Turkish, which acts as an instrument in the building of bridges of dialogue by overcoming the lack of communication among cultures and in revealing the cultural values under the common roof of humanity, well deserves the title of “the language of love.”

Democracy and modernization

A test is due in order to measure the success of modernity with particular references to its alleged achievements and ideals: liberties and freedoms, welfare and wealth and security and safety.

1) In essence, modernity inherently involves inequality and injustice. It is quite obvious that the entire world is not able to become as wealthy as the Western world. The striking performance of China causes rapid exhaustion of natural resources, including oil. As long as there are two major camps -- the poor and the rich -- in the world, global peace, stability and serenity are not possible.

2) Wealth and welfare achieved through modernity pose a great danger to the planet and life on it, undermine ecological balances and make the world an unbearable place. Global warming and climate change are the initial signals of this process.

3) The modern West is based on a perception of the world without any intrinsic meaning and goal and transforms the human being into an organism focused on production, consumption and mating. To this end, the basic ideas of this modern world impose nihilism onto the entire world.

The modern Western world is reluctant to maintain dialogue with other religions and cultures; instead, it opts to distance itself from others. The West will have to either shift to quite a different perspective to create a just and fair world by giving up part of its wealth, or it will remain the source and primary reason of growing inequalities between different regions and classes, of terrorism, violence, ethnic cleansing and repression.

Western countries rely on 80 percent of the entire world's production while they represent only 15 percent of the globe's total population. Pretty soon this will drop to 10 percent. In other words, they will be a small wealthy island in a sea of poor. This is neither natural nor sustainable.

As long as wars break out to sustain this unequal global order -- it should be noted that 95 percent of the 500 wars over the last two centuries were experienced in the Western world or they were caused by the active involvement of Western countries -- violence and terror will escalate and this will inevitably prioritize security issues over liberties. As liberties retreat, wealth will diminish and this will trigger consecutive global crises. Wars have made contributions to the Western world; the current international order guarantees domination and welfare of a part of the world population, but it simply does not care for the others. Today, three Western multinational corporations seek to acquire 75 percent of Iraqi oil for 30 years.

Inequality is causing serious problems and disruption not only on the global level but also on the domestic level because modernization and development plans are inherently based on inequality. Injustice in income distribution leads to social turmoil, blocks positive politics and causes violence and terror. This is the case not only on the domestic but also on the global level. As long as inequality persists, poverty becomes deeper and more visible and the young and desperate masses in urban areas are alienated; this of course breeds a culture of violence. Current models are unable to control the migration of people from rural to urban areas. Wars and invasions are not the solution to overcome these crises.

Unfortunately, democracies fail to prevent wars because, among others, lobbies, pressure groups and capital circles strongly influence the decisions of parliaments with their huge financial resources.

Western democracies are the best among the available worst options, but they have failed to ensure pluralism and justice in the past and today there is no sign that they will achieve these goals because Western democracies are pluralist in a political sense while they are monist from a cultural and social perspective. They exclude a strong ethical value like justice in the political culture. As terror and wars put an emphasis on security, the sphere of the available and recognized liberties gets narrower. What should be done at this stage is not to blame a certain religion, what should be done now is to seek real solutions to current huge problems.

Every person is a unique individual. In addition, everyone is shaped and conditioned by their environment, especially family. For this reason it is essential that the "Malcolm X: A Research Site" contain information on the family of Malcolm Little/Malcolm X/Malik Shabazz.

In 1994 Jan Carew stated the case for this page quite clearly: "We need to bring Malcolm back to earth and to humanize his memory. The time has come to frame him against the background of an extended family and then place him in the context of the larger community of people in America and abroad who influenced him and whom he, in turn, influenced."(Ghosts in Our Blood, 1994)

In general, we believe that Malcolm X belongs to his family, to his community, to the fighters for Black Liberation, and to freedom loving people all over the world.
