Nigeria

Let the “I” in me
lie down beside
a soft “g”
and I’ll tell you about
the “e” who remains silent
so another may be heard.
Let me tell you again -
if you promise not to
blush -
how the soft breath of an “h”
cools the nape of an “S’s” long neck
and how I’ve often wondered
whether a slinky font
might make my voice
more appealing
and how I quite admire the
monogamous “Q” who
steps out only with “u.”
Or maybe you’d like
to hear how I climbed a tall “T”
only to fall from its steep edge
or about the time I
crawled into an “O” and
peeked out the other side
where I found an “m” and
learned the universal language.
Perhaps you’d be interested
to know that at times
I curl up like a fetal “a”
aching like a superfluous “k”
on its knees knocking
at a door that won’t open
or that I long to fly on the
wings of “w”, slide down the
slippery slopes of “U” and
live like versatile “Y.”
Instead, I find myself
crossing the bridge of “H”
alongside moody “c”
in a Chagall-like fantasy
crying under a crescent moon
lamenting the plight
of young “i” and “j”
who are destined always
to sit beneath that point
just out of reach.
Another time I’ll tell you
how I survived impalement
by the sharp point of “V”,
but for now
let the “I” in me
lie down to doze
last in line
beside a sleepy “z.”
