Ours is a planet in crisis. But the bible is providing the law of life, God's Ten Commandments, as moral and spiritual rules and guiding principles for all the citizens all over the world.

The Biible tell us what sin is. Sin is deviation from the right way. Sin can be defined as rebellion. Everyone who lives sinfully is living in violation of law. Sin is violation of law.

The ten commandments are pattern of conduct for all mankind, for all time. The Psalmist writes about God's commandments, "All his commandments are sure. They stand fast forever and ever". The world desperately needs a reenstatement of these values.

It is not the commandments that are a burden. Sin is the burden. "This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome". God's laws are intended to maximize our best good. In the words of Billy Graham "Sin has not changed. The Ten Commandments are still God's standard.... God has drawn a line between right and wrong in the Ten Commandments... The Ten Commandments do not make us sinners. They reveal the fact that we are sinners..." The principles of the Ten Commandments have been enshrined in systems of national law since Old Testament times.

The original purpose of God's law was to guide man toward the fullest enjoyment of life. The law was designed to benefit man. It is a gift of God's love. The Ten Commandments are the universal foundation of all ethics. They are written in Exodus 20.

As we follow the biblical order, the first commandment directs the exclusive worship of the one true God. The second forbids idolatry. The third prohibits irreverence and the perjury that involves the invoking of the divine name. The fourth calls for the observance of the Sabbath and identifies the true God as the Creator of Heaven and Earth. The fifth requires children to submit to their parents as God's appointed agents for the transmission of His revealed will to succeeding generations. The sixth protects life as sacred. The seventh enjoins purity and safeguards the marital relationship. The eight protects the property. The ninth guards truth and proscribes perjury. And the 10th goes to the root of all human relationships by prohibiting the coveting of what belongs to others.

It has always been God's intention that His followers should keep His commandments as a love response for what He has done for them. The whole law could be summarized in one word -- LOVE!

It is significant that Jesus was considered by His own countrymen as a teacher of law. In fact, Jesus gave a firm intimation to would-be followers who wished to disown or misuse the Law, "Until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplised".

In the midst of confusion, conflict and disaster we can still hear the reassuring voice of God giving us the best course of safety. We need to look again at one of humanity's classic statement of moral norms, the Ten Commandments.
