FIRST- AID

First-aid is critically important workplace skill that aims to preserve life, prevent worsening of any injuries and to promote recovery; it can literally mean the difference between life and death.

1.      Well-maintained first-aid kits, when combined with appropriate training for their use, can minimize the effect of medical incidents.

2.      The first-aid kit/s should be sealed, well marked, and mounted in a central location. Designate someone to inspect and maintain the kits.

3.      All employees must undergo training in first aid procedures.

4.      Employees under the Safety & Security Unit must, however, have a more comprehensive training – regularly tested ang re-trained.

5.      In giving first- aid, remember the initial response:

                  A- Ask for help                 I - Intervene

D- Do not further harm

       6. Do an initial survey and try to answer the following questions:

o       Is the scene safe?

o       What happened?

o       How many people injured?

o       Are there bystanders who can help?

      7.  Identify yourself as a trained to administer first-aid and get consent to give care.

      8. Do not forget to activate medical assistance, Depending on the situation, you may

phone first and phone fast or ask a bystander to make the telephone call for help.

      9. When activating medical assistance, remember the following details:

o       What happened?

o       Address of Hotel/location inside the building

o       How many people were injured?

o       Extent of injury and first –aid given

o       The telephone number from where you are calling

o       Identify yourself

     10. Do a PRIMARY SURVEY – (1) check for responsiveness of the victim and (2)

           Check for airway.

Check for Responsiveness of the Victim

          “Sir, are you okay?

          Check for Airway

For the head, do the tilt chin maneuver

For the jaw, do the thrust maneuver

 11. Do a SECONDARY SURVEY: (1) interview the victim and (2) check the vital signs

      Interview the Victim

  • Ask for the victim’s name.
  • Ask what happened
  • Asses sample history

     Check for the Vital Signs

  • Determine radial or carotid pulse ( pulse rate)

Adults       60-90 / minute

Children    80-100 / minute

Infants       100-120 minute

  • Determine breathing ( respiration rate)
Adults        12-20 / minute

           Children      18-25 / minute

            Infants        25-35 / minute

  • Determine skin appearance

Look at the victim’s face and lips. Record skin appearance, temperature, moisture, and color.

  • Do head –to-toe examination

Look for deformity, contusions, abrasion, puncture, burn, tenderness, laceration, or swelling.
