Have a variety of tasks to do. Try and avoid a whole lesson of writing or reading. For example, you may start the lesson with a 10 minute writing activity, then change to a discussion and group task and then end with an individual task. Try and make some tasks 'hands on'. Maybe you can turn something into a matching exercise or game or quiz. Try and be inventive.
One thing I have found really important in teaching is to have the kids aware of WHAT it is you want them to learn. Start the lesson with your learning intention. Eg, "This lesson we are going to learn about.... By the end of the lesson you will know....." That way they are involved in their learning. Take time at the end of the lesson to recap what they have learned. You can begin the next lesson with a short quiz on some of the previous lesson's content. This keeps them thinking about the learning.
