first views of NYC and Manhattan
What a cosmopolitan city. It’s too busy that you don’t even have time to feel overwhelmed to be in the one and only New York City of the world.
Walking along 5th Avenue and inside central park, owning a sense of time-sharing with the people who are changing the world every minute; seeing the direct product of some of the greatest minds in the Metropolitan Museum; Les Miserables on Broadway was a great experience; leaning beside the window at night time maneuvering in the daytime constructed by neon lights, sitting on the ferry to Liberty and Ellis islands having the sunset and breeze on Atlantic Ocean fill the senses, imagining what it felt like when the first immigrants from Europe arrived at this land after a long trip by water, their eyes filled with exciting tears overlooking the land which marked hope and freedom.
New York very much reminds me of Beijing - for those who never been to Beijing, you are safe to think New York, but with less Neon lights and tall buildings scrambled into one compact space. New York has a 3D social complexity which I think marks its uniqueness, even Toronto can’t quite compare. It also brings you a strong sense of what we call “reality”, which tightly associates itself with money. Would I want to live here? Maybe for a period of time - it all depends on what constitutes “living”, doesn’t it?
This time, being back means staying home and not traveling for a substantial period of time. Good, I’m all settled for another school year.
