Many times students have asked me these questions so here goes....

Prefix - a group of letters that is added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning and make a new word, such as 'un' in 'untie' or 'mis' in 'misunderstand'.  (Taken from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Online)

Suffix - a letter or letters added to the end of a word to form a new word, such as 'ness' in 'kindness' or 'ly' in 'suddenly' (Taken from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Online)

Many Chinese students especially them, will run to their dictionary the moment they don't know what a word means. Sometimes this is not necessary. One only needs to try and dissect or cut up the word into little pieces to ascertain its meaning.

Below are some links on the Internet to some prefixes and suffixes to help you do your 'surgery' on words:

Have fun and enjoy! :-)
