“Tagesschau” says that to get more space for their palm-fields they need to get their palm-oil from farmers on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo now illegally burned down parts of the respective country’s rainforest. However they soon realized they lost control over the fire and now the fire brigades of Borneo and Sumatra try hard to get these fires under control. Millions of people risk losing their home or get serious health problems due to the smoke. Many critically-endangered animals and plants are threatened by the fire.
Palm-oil is that precious, because it is used in so many ways. It can be used to produce cosmetics, for chocolate, for frozen food, to treat meat, it can be used medically etc.

This rainforest is the home of the hominidae monkey orang – utan. These animals are critically endangered, not only because of illegal or legal hunting, but because their habitat, the rainforest gets destroyed.
Apart from that some people consider it to be cool and exciting to have them as pets and to let them do silly tricks, but unfortunately they can’t keep them species-appropriate and thus a lot of them become seriously sick or maladjusted.
The jungle Bukit Tigapuluh in Sumatra also is a place where these monkeys can be found, but there always are enterprises who claim this place for themselves. Just a few months ago for example there were some paper – producing factories who claimed this place for their tree plantations, meaning that some of the original trees of this tropical forest were to get logged.
Please visit “http://savetheorangutan.org/splash.html” if you want to get tips how to get involved. ( Yes! I already removed my photo of this animal. )

I just didn’t want my first post to be kind of hidden behind all the other things I posted here, so : If you want to help the rainforest of Borneo and its orangutans, you are invited to visit the following websites: “http://savetheorangutan.org/splash.html” and “http://www.iucn.org/”.

Do you know that there are about 15,000 species of flowering plants with 3,000 species of trees (267 species are dipterocarps), 221 species of terrestrial mammals and 420 species of resident birds in Borneo (MacKinnon et al. 1998)?
