Now it’s been half a month that doctors planted a pig’s heart into the body of a seriously ill patient. While it may be true that a pig’s organs are very similar to human organs and that so far the patient seems to be okay some doctors still are sceptical as we don’t know yet the long-term effects this transplantation will have on this very patient. For now he’s doing fine, but that doesn’t mean he will be fine in let’s say three months. Also even the most optimistic experts say it will take decades until this kind of transplantation becomes standard. Until then human donor-organs still are needed badly. My source is the news show ‘Tagesschau’.

Another nice idea for people who can’t donate bone marrow to get involved. ‘GEA’ says that on October 16th some elder ladies from a small village in Baden-Wuerttemberg sold bread they had baked themselves to earn money for ‘DKMS’ an aid-organization that supports people who need a bone marrow donation. Previously they had paid for a newspaper insert to make sure as many customers as possible would come.
