‘Domradio’ says that in Benin parts of society still accept mild acts of discrimination against deaf people. For example families often neglect children who can’t hear and focus on those sons and daughters that have perfect hearing. There are only two schools, boarding schools, in the entire country to teach exclusively deaf children. Those who can’t go to either of these boarding schools and don’t have the money for a private school either must attend regular schools for students WHO CAN HEAR. There classmates and teachers often label them as dumb and mock them, because they don’t learn as fast as the other kids. After all the other kids have the advantage that they can hear what the teacher explains in addition to what he writes on the board. Plus non-deaf people can ask questions when they don’t understand without having to use sign language. Deaf people on the contrary depend on people who can use sign language when they have a question. A vocalized answer would be useless as the deaf person wouldn’t be able to hear it.
Also as Benin has many unemployed people, most employers wouldn’t hire someone with a disability as there are plenty of healthy applicants around.

The latest episode of the German TV-show “TopZehn” – an adaption of the American TV-show “Alltime10” – was about the 10 most deadly animals.
One of them was the entire class of tapeworms – fish tapeworm, fox tapeworm, dog tapeworm, pig tapeworm, cow tapeworm etc. Especially in least developed countries in West Africa – Benin for example – these animals are responsible for many deaths per year.
Also there are about 67 subspecies of the class of anopheles, a mosquito that can transmit the often lethal disease malaria. Some of them live in Benin, too.
Another deadly animal, a reptile (snake) called Western green mamba also lives here.

“Tagesschau” says that in Brazil a disease called yellow fever now is on the rise. They say that while spread of yellow fewer happened in Brazil in the past, too, this disease is more likely to torment larger areas in the African countries Angola, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Ethiopia, Senegal, Rwanda, Mauritania, Togo, Uganda, Somalia, Tanzania, Sudan, Eritrea. Sadly these are all Least Developed Countries that due to their critical economical status lack good doctors as well as medicine that would be crucial to fight yellow fever.
