Nightingale reed warbler, medium tree – finch, nihoa finch, gough finch – just to name a few – are four of the many specimens of critically endangered specimens songbirds. They are caught in the wild and then sold – even though in many countries it is illegal to sell or to own animals captured from the wild. In some countries people even find these little birds delicious. Sometimes we also disturb nesting birds unintentionally. Even our pet cats – which we usually love a lot and consider as cuddly animals – are responsible for this decline. At the same time wild songbirds are so useful. Scientists say that even though some of us don’t realize that, their melodies calm us, they kill flies – some of which spread diseases – and many predators need them as an important source of food, because not only the living birds, but also their eggs are eatable. Some animals can even feed on their carcasses. If you want to help – and of course also can help -, please support IUCN or BirdLife International.
