Each country spares no efforts to develop nuclear technology, which can offer clean and cheap energy but also be used to make nuclear weapons. It is because of its special functions that the development of nuclear technology has been a tough international issue. Some people appose exploiting it, afraid of the mass destruction caused, but I think its merits outperform demerits. First of all, the nuclear power is an alternative to fossil oil or coal to generate electricity, reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The costs of constructing a nuclear station are huge, but it is more economically efficient to use the energy generated by the station than the one transformed from oil and coal in the future. Second, the nuclear weapons owned by several countries maintain world peace. Countries are restricted to each other by them, and no one dares to attack a country with nuclear weapons first. It is conducive to constituting a regional peace, when several countries own the technology to make nuclear weapons. Third, the research on nuclear power paves the way for exploration in other scientific fields, like physics and medicine. Natural subjects are related to each other. Mrs. CURIE found radium, which is later used as the radiation element in nuclear fusion.

On the other hand, nuclear power has its disadvantages. The Chernobyl catastrophe cannot be forgotten which was resulted from nuclear leakage, and more importance should be attached to the disposal of radiation wastes. What’s more, the Earth would be ruined if the nuclear weapon technology fell into hands of terrorists, and each State is held responsible for avoiding proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Even though nuclear power has so many demerits, it is still worth developing. To which extent this technology is helping us depends on how we utilize it and which aspects it is applied to. No matter is perfect in this world, so we might as well regard nuclear power in a positive way.
