Didi

Dave:  Didi, ever since Michael Jackson’s trial ended, he’s been living in Bahrain.

Didi:  Really?

Dave:  Yeah. Apparently, it’s really beautiful.

Didi:  Uh huh.

Dave:  But, just the other day he was in Saudi Arabia, and he was at, like, a shopping mall or something and he walked into a woman’s bathroom and used it.

Didi:  A faux pas!

Dave:  It’s a real faux pas in Saudi Arabia, really stirred things up.

Didi:  I bet. There’s a lot of cultural differences there, aren’t there?

Dave:  Especially in Saudi Arabia, between the men and women. Like women, I guess, um, can’t drive a car.

Didi:  Mm hm.

Dave:  I’ve had students from Saudi Arabia who tell me, you know, they have to go back to Saudi Arabia to take care of their mothers and sisters.

Didi:  They’re much more subordinate.

Dave:  Much more subordinate.

Didi:  Mm hm.

Dave:  But Michael Jackson’s been there. He’s, ah, living as an expat, I guess. And, it sounds like he’s enjoying himself.

Didi:  Well, I’m glad he’s far away.

Discussion

Michael Jackson caused a lot of problems when he used a women’s bathroom in Saudi Arabia. Every culture has different rules about the relationship between men and women. While there are separate bathrooms for men and women in America, it is somewhat common at crowded bars and dance clubs for women to use the men’s bathroom, and vice versa.
What are the rules in your country? What do you think about countries and cultures who have rules different than your own?
