One of the benefits of reality TV is that it brings us images of regular people who don’t necessarily fit the mould the media sets for a beautiful person. That’s one thing Kevin likes about American Idol, but he feels that the people on Pussycat Dolls are a little more homogenized. Listen to him talk to Amanda about it.

Kevin:  So I caught the tail end of that Pussycat Dolls show the other day, like where they’re looking for the new member, have you seen it?

Amanda:  Oh, I heard about that, what’d you think?

Kevin:  A little bit weak sauce.

Amanda:  So since it airs the same time as American Idol, next week…what do you think?

Kevin:  Well, if I had to watch…I probably wouldn’t watch either, but if I had to choose, I’d choose American Idol. I just think the talent is better.

Amanda:  So on the Pussycat search, it’s dancing, singing, and of course, the whole package, the look, right?

Kevin:  But everyone’s sort of skinny and looks really young…

Amanda:  And scantily clad, I’m assuming.

Kevin:  Yes. Whereas on American Idol you get more of a mix of people.

Amanda:  Absolutely. So what’s the hook on the show? Is it the judges? The comments? Are they real critique-y like Simon Cowell? Are the girls crying? Cat fights?

Kevin:  Well, I just caught the tail of it, so I didn’t pay that much attention to it. I just watched a couple of girls and perform and it was kind of lame.

Amanda:  If you were a girl, would you try out?

Kevin:  If I were 90 pounds and looked like I were 13 maybe.

Amanda:  Really? I would.

Kevin:  How about you?

Amanda:  Absolutely. If I didn’t miss the age cut off by 15 years I would do it.

Kevin:  Let’s do it.

Discussion

Kevin saw a few minutes of Pussycat Dolls, a show sort of like Rockstar where a groups holds auditions for a new member on television. He didn’t really like the show very much because he didn’t think the contestants had as much as talent as the people on American Idol. Plus they’re all really skinny and young.

Amanda and Kevin jokingly agree to try out for the show. Would you ever try out for a reality TV show? Do you like the thin-and-skin style of the women in the video or do you prefer more variety?
