Each of us has a special food that brings back good memories. Maybe, you love the smell of your mom’s favorite soup, or perhaps, the smell of your dad’s grilled steaks reminds you of happy summer memories. For many people in the United States, one of these special foods is apple pie. In fact, it’s a summer tradition to eat apple pie a la mode, or with ice cream.

Many US grandmothers have secret apple pie recipes that they only share with their families. People may have different ideas about how to make an apple pie, but most recipes have a buttery crust, Granny Smith apples, and lots of cinnamon and sugar. The most satisfying slice of home-baked apple pie is fresh from the oven and served with a cold scoop of ice cream.

Romeo is telling Dominique about his grandmother’s apple pie. Listen to today’s English lesson to hear why he loves it so much.

Romeo:  You know what I miss right now?

Dominique:  What?

Romeo:  Grandmama’s apple pie a la mode.

Dominique:  Really?!

Romeo:  Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it.

Dominique:  I can’t do it with the ice cream, though, so I guess that wouldn’t make it a la mode, right?

Romeo:  You can’t do apple pie with ice cream?

Dominique:  No. Because I like to eat my apple…

Romeo:  Are you, like, lactose intolerant?

Dominique:  Actually, I am.

Romeo:  Oh! Well, then there it is there. Yeah, you’re missing out. I mean, at least you can have the home-baked apple pie with the crust and…

Dominique:  Oh yes!

Romeo:  cinnamon and sugar.

Dominique:  It’s so satisfying.

Romeo:  I know, right? Just sliced up real nice and just warm…

Dominique:  The Granny Smith apples… so delicious!

Romeo:  Yeah, yeah. I mean, whose other apples would you want?

Dominique:  Some people use the red apples.

Romeo:  That’s so wrong.

Dominique:  It is.

Romeo:  That’s just apple pie a la rude.

Dominique:  Totally disrespectful.

Romeo:  I guess what I’m saying is… Would you like to go meet my grandma and have some apple pie?

Dominique:  All right! Let’s do it.

Romeo:  It’s a date.

Romeo has been thinking about his grandmother’s home-baked apple pie. He tells Dominique that he’d really like to have some with ice cream right now. Dominique also loves fresh apple pie, but she’s lactose intolerant, so she can’t eat ice cream. Romeo feels bad for her because apple pie a la mode is so delicious, but at least she can enjoy the pie.

Romeo and Dominique talk about their favorite parts of an apple pie. They both agree that a good apple pie has a delicious crust with cinnamon and sugar. They also agree that Granny Smith apples are the best apples for pie. In fact, they don’t like apple pie with red apples at all.

What is your family’s favorite food to eat together? Do you like to bake pies?
