UK scientist writes in new book that "it is not necessary to invoke God to … get the Universe going".

God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, Britain's award-winning physicist has said.

In his new book, The Grand Design, to be released this month, Stephen Hawking argues that "because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing".

The book, written with Leonard Mlodinow, a US physicist, is to be published on September 9.

In an extract published in the British newspaper The Times on Thursday, Hawking says that spontaneous creation is the reason there is something – as opposed to nothing, and that unravelling a complex series of theories will explain the universe.

Hawking reportedly argues "it is not necessary to invoke God to … get the Universe going".

In his previous book, A Brief History of Time, Hawking had appeared to accept the possibility of a creator, saying the discovery of a complete theory would allow humans to "know the mind of God".

I am not a believer, but who created gravity? and who started that cycle of "big bang-big crouch" It is just impossible to know if god exists or not, it is faith or lack of faith, not rationality or lack of rationality. 

i feel strange too. if it's a design, who's a designer ? what i catch is, a word playing game coming. just cut the word God and paste with word NATURE.

lol i feel strange about it too, i mean he is super nerd and the best physican. I'll try to read his book to see what he proposes, then I'll comment :P

The idea that the universe does not need a "God" entity to start it in order to exist isn't really controversial among scientists these days.  

I remember reading stuff about spontaneous creation, cyclical universes, and all that other stuff 10 years ago.  I imagine Dr. Hawking, in his own way, has come up with an even more elegant explanation for what we now know about the universe.

REASONED LOGIC:

To this kind of sympathetic, yet sceptical mentality, the Author of the Book

(Al-Qur'an) uses various types of arguments to resolve his doubts. To the

atheists and agnostics, the cynics and the sceptics, who have a superabundance

of scientific knowledge and who consider themselves to be

"intellectual giants," the point is driven home that they are in reality like

stunted "dwarfs." They are like the dwarf who may have acquired abnormal

development in any one particular direction at the expense of other parts of

his faculty, like an oversized head on a puny body, the Supreme Creator

questions him.

But before we pose God's question to him, let me satisfy my own curiosity.

"You men of science who have studied astronomy and who study our

Universe through your mighty telescopes as if scrutinising an object in the

palm of your hand; tell me how did this Universe come into being?" This man

of science though lacking in spiritual insight, is nevertheless most generous

years ago our Universe was a single piece of matter, and there happened a
