Thanksgiving is this Thursday, so I was planning to write about Thanksgiving
music. Unfortunately, I can’t think of any. Unlike other holidays,Thanksgiving isn’t a musical day. I guess people are saving their voices for other winter holidays like Christmas.
So, instead of holiday music, I’m going to tell you about a place I went
last night. It’s called Hugh Jorgan’s and it’s a dueling piano bar.

Hugh Jorgan’s is in Delray Beach, Florida. I’m in Florida with my
family for vacation and I went there last night with my cousins. At Hugh Jorgan’s, two piano players are on stage at the same time. They take turns playing songs, and each of them does his best to make the audience excited.
In order to get the crowd fired up, they play songs that everyone knows. Last night they played a lot of Beatles’ songs and popular songs from the
70’s. For example, they played “Twist and Shout,” “Life Goes On” and “Hey Jude.” They also played songs like “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night, “Surfin’ USA by the Beach Boys, “ABC” by the Jackson 5 and “Dancing Queen” by ABBA. Most Americans over 20 years-old know the words to these songs, so they can all sing along.
The best thing about going to a place like Hugh Jorgan’s is when the piano players invite people on stage. Last night, they invited people up to celebrate their birthdays and wedding anniverseries. People are usually
nervous about dancing in front of so many people, so they look funny when they’re up there. It doesn’t help that the piano players usually make fun of them while they’re dancing.

Discussion

Hugh Jorgan’s isn’t the only dueling piano bar in the world. In fact, there are places just like it all over the United States. In Portland, there’s a dueling piano bar called Boogie Woogie’s. I’ve been there, but for some reason it wasn’t as much fun as Hugh Jorgan’s. If you get the chance to go to a place like Hugh Jorgan’s, you should!
Have you ever been to a dueling piano bar? Do you like singing along to your favorite songs? Would you have the courage to get on stage? Come to the Music Mix message board and let us know!
Rock on,
Migs
