John: Hey, you know that song Don’t Phunk with My Heart?
Dave: Yeah, yeah. Black Eyed Peas.
John: Yeah, that’s a pretty good song. You have the album?
Dave: Yeah, I do. I listen to it when I go jogging.
John: Oh, you do?
Dave: Yeah, it’s great…great music. It’s got a lot of spunk.
John: Yeah, have they been to Portland recently for a show?
Dave: You know, I’m not sure. But I think they’re on a tour for their new album.
John: Oh, I’ll have to check out their…their tour dates.
Dave: Yeah, they’re a good band.
John: Yeah, have you ever seen them live?
Dave: I haven’t. No.
John: Do they have…ah…previous albums as well?
Dave: Yeah, they had one album a few years ago. Um, I didn’t really care for it. But this new album’s got a different sound. I really like it.
John: Now, didn’t they become popular because Justin Timberlake used some of their stuff?
Dave: Yeah, I think they’re buddies with J.T.
John: Oh, that’s cool.

There’s an expression in English that says, “Variety is the spice of life.” This means that it is good to try different things. And what else in the world has more variety than styles of music? The American popular music scene is dominated by rap, hip hop, pop and country western styles. Bands and musicians such as Eminem, Gwen Steffani, Britney Spears and Faith Hill are famous world-wide. But there are large local and underground music scenes where trance, folk and punk are all the rage.
