Dave: The other night I had dinner at a friend’s, and after dinner we put on the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Have you seen it?
John: No. I haven’t even heard of it. Is it a horror?
Dave: It’s, like, a horror slash courtroom drama. So, it’s based on the true story of this girl who is possessed, and the priest who performs the exorcism, he’s not successful, so she dies.
John: Is it gory, at all?
Dave: It’s not so gory, only the pictures of her when she’s possessed and her skin’s all green and wrinkled.
John: You know, horror movies don’t scare me that much, except those.
Dave: Yes!
John: For some reason, when people are possessed with something…
Dave: Right.
John: ...it freaks me out. Now, even though I don’t believe in that very much, it trips me out to see someone’s head spinning around.
Dave: The Exorcist. The only movie I can’t watch by myself.
John: Yeah. Why is that? Why is it so freaky?

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a 24 year old German woman who died in 1976 after nearly a year of exorcism rituals. Her parents and the family priest said that Anneliese was possessed by six demons. Doctors, however, said that she was not possessed but that she suffered from epilepsy.
Exorcisms and the belief that demons can possess people have existed in many cultures for thousands of years, though modern science, especially psychology, is changing these beliefs.
