I'm Sorry

I'm Sorry English, baby! Video Lesson

Date: Feb 09 2007

Themes: Friend, How To

Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

It’s hard to say you’re sorry. Apologizing means admitting you were wrong. It means admitting you are fallible. Most people are not very good at apologizing in their own language, let alone a foreign language.

In English, when you want to tell someone you are sorry, you say either “I’m sorry” or “I apologize.” If you hurt someone’s feelings, you can say “I apologize for hurting your feelings.” If you forget to call a friend, you can say, “I’m so sorry I didn’t call you!”

It is much easier to forgive someone when they offer a sincere apology.

Listen to Mason and Amanda talk about the delicate subject of apologies.

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Mason:  So, OK, here’s a funny thing that happened the other day. Uh, just, you know, a little, a little thing. But I went… I got home and all the milk that I’d just bought the other day was gone out of the fridge.

Amanda:  OK. So little thing.

Mason:  Little thing. Serious little thing. And, so, like, I go to my roommate’s room and I’m, like, “Hey, there’s no milk.” And she says, “Yeah, I really wanted to apologize about that.”

Amanda:  That’s the end of story.

Mason:  And that’s it.

Amanda:  So no “I’m sorry.”

Mason:  She didn’t say “I’m sorry.”

Amanda:  So that’s not an apology.

Mason:  She just said that she wanted to apologize.

Amanda:  I hate that.

Mason:  Or, you know, and then people say, “I should apologize” or “I wanted…” you know, but yeah.

Amanda:  So basically they’re talking about the act of apologizing…

Mason:  It’s like a concept.

Amanda:  And never following through.

Mason:  It’s like, “I like the idea of apologies but I don’t really do that.”

Amanda:  OK.

Mason:  That’s kind of what she’s saying.

Amanda:  Well, apologies are very difficult.

Mason:  Yeah.

Amanda:  I don’t care who you are, they’re very difficult to do.

Mason:  Mm hm. But what about… do you think that’s it? That it’s, like, they’re just… It’s a, it’s a half, a half way?

Amanda:  It’s avoiding something that’s uncomfortable, certainly.

Mason:  Hm.

Discussion

Mason was more annoyed by the fact that his roommate wouldn’t really say she was sorry than by the fact that she drank all the milk.

Mason and Amanda agree that people often talk about apologizing or talk around an apology rather than just saying they are sorry.

Amanda points out that apologizing is difficult for everyone. It can be uncomfortable to admit that you are wrong.

Do you avoid apologizing?

Or are you good at saying you are sorry?

i don't understand why there are people who don't know how to say sorry when it's really needed. it wouldn't hurt to apologize if you did something wrong to someone. a simple sincere "i'm sorry" would be nice.
