Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

We could have talked about any number of romantic movies today, in which two people fall in love and love happily ever after.

But we decided to put a twist on things and present a movie that is based much more in reality than in lovey-dovey fantasy land.

The title of the movie is the first hint that this isn’t just a love story: The Last Kiss. Why is it the last kiss? Shouldn’t it be the first kiss or the best kiss?

Zach Braff, from the popular American sitcom Scrubs, put out an awesome love-story movie a couple of years ago called Garden State. But the The Last Kiss shows the darker side of love: the doubts, the fear, the mistakes.

Listen to Amanda and Mason talk about relationship reality in The Last Kiss.

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Mason

Mason: What would you think are some good movies to watch on Valentine’s Day? Like, something that just came out or… on video…

Amanda:  The Last Kiss was pretty good. That’s still in my mind.

Mason:  Yeah?

Amanda:  Yeah.

Mason:  I didn’t really like it but aside from that I don’t, I don’t necessarily think of it as a romantic film.

Amanda:  I thought it was real and it hit home. I thought it was a great film to watch with your current partner.

Mason:  Well, I mean, OK, ‘cause, I mean, as someone who’s married and in a long-term relationship...

Amanda:  Right.

Mason:  Maybe I could see it having a much different… That’s a different perspective than I have.

Amanda:  I think because it was so open and honest about infidelity, it forced you to speak about that topic with your partner and get it out in the open.

Mason:  Did it?

Amanda:  So it’s not a taboo topic to talk about it. And when you’re talking about something like that I think you’re less prone to go and behave poorly. There’s nothing to hide.

Mason:  OK. So The Last Kiss made Zach Braff the sacrificial lamb, if you will…

Amanda:  Yes.

Mason:  For the relationships of us all.

Amanda:  Or for people in their thirtysomethings.

Mason:  In their thirtysomethings.

Amanda:  Yes. And you know what? Uh, Jacinda from The Real World: London?

Mason:  Uh huh.

Amanda:  Pretty good.

Mason:  Is that what she…

Amanda:  That’s who that was.

Mason:  Really?

Amanda:  Yes.

Mason:  Well…

Amanda:  Forrilla.

Discussion

Amanda liked the honesty of The Last Kiss. She is married, so she had a slightly different perspective from Mason, who didn’t really like the film.

They agree that even though this movie is about love, it is not really a romantic film.

When Amanda says, “Forrilla!” she is just joking around. “Forrilla” isn’t even a word! She means “For real.”

Have you seen The Last Kiss?

Do you talk about infidelity with your boyfriend or girlfriend?

But of course you won’t have the same perspective if you differ in marital status.

I was about to ask that too. I first thought it was a name. Thanks for the idea! Forilla sounds cute although confusing, but then it was just "for real" huh. Thanks again!

If you and your partner are loyal to each other, then this conversation about infidelity maybe open and honest, but if one of you is already cheating on his/her partner, then I am afraid he/she is not willing to carry on this talking.
