Into the Wild

Most people have a slight desire to get rid of all of their possessions and hit the road. Christopher McCandless gave in to that idea. Shortly after graduating from college, he gave everything he had away and traveled for two years.

He came to Alaska where he hunted to survive. Eventually, he accidentally ate some poisoned seeds and his adventures came to an end. He was found dead in an abandoned bus.

In 1996, Jon Krakauer turned McCandless’ story into a book called Into the Wild. The book was recently made into a movie with a soundtrack by Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder. Listen to Marni and Amanda talk about it.

Amanda

Marni: Oh my God, best book.

Amanda: I know.

Marni: Into the Wild. I actually just saw the movie.

Amanda: You did?

Marni: Yes. I loved the book and I loved the movie. Very different takes on a very classic story of yearning and loss and…it’s beautiful.

Amanda: I agree and what I like is it could pretty much apply to anyone of any age because…

Marni: Yes!

Amanda: Just the storyline, like you said, of the coming of age and growing pains, and the general concept, it doesn’t matter when it takes place or who’s reading or watching the movie, anyone can appreciate it.

Marni: Yeah. It was a true story, obviously, it was a real person who did this and I think it’s so interesting that so many people were attracted to his story. I read the book and I was just crying and I was so moved by it! I felt that way in the film too. I think Sean Penn obviously felt the same way. Brilliant director, it was beautifully shot...

Amanda: I was actually real impressed with his directing skills because I don’t really think of Sean in that way.

Marni: Oh really?

Amanda: Yeah.

Discussion

Amanda and Marni agree that Into the Wild is a great book and movie because the story is something that anyone of any age can identify with. The story of traveling, meeting people and becoming wiser is, in a way, everyone’s story.

But, or course, everyone doesn’t die in a bus in Alaska or get sung about by Eddie Vedder. Into the Wild truly is a remarkable story and Sean Penn did a good job of directing it, even though Amanda didn’t really think of him as a director before.

It really needs great courage to abandon all your possessions and let yourself into the wild. It is hard to do but I think it will be a good experience. Because there is only one life_~! I am truly yeaning for this "into the wild"

i never heard or watched that movie but i think it was the best book .it talks about advanture of somebody who wanted earn money or survive in other world which he doesn’t know .
we can say his story is so moved but also the coming of age can relate to as their futur life.

If you want to know the real story,I suggest you read the book.The movie can't reflect the real story in some way.It add a short love story.But,on the other hand ,I was strongly attracted by the nature when watching the movie.It is a good movie.

I havn't seen this movie,but souned wonderfil and worth watching.
I like traveling around the wprld,bit now it really is a dream,for I just left the college and got a job in a trading company.The job is really heavy,sometimes I had no time to enjoy my life.It really tired me before,so I learn to change ,to make work more effective,make life more interesting.New year,New resolution!

I haven´t seen this movie yet, but I want. Traveling alone is a good experience because you have to face many difficult situations and you learn with it. It´s a pity Christopher´s story finished this way.
