2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

In English, we say that people have a calling. Your calling is whatever seems to be the best thing for you to do with your life. Some people are called to be doctors and help the sick. Others find that their calling is business and they’re good at making money.

Some believe they are called by God to spread a divine message. These people usually work with a church, but sometimes they simply go out in public to help promote their beliefs.

Watch as Jason talks to a street preacher about what it’s like to stand on a street corner and talk about God with anyone who will listen.

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Dialog

1. Watch and Read - Watch the video and read the dialog at the same time.

2. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

Richard

Jason:  Welcome to English, baby!. I’m Jason and I’m here with a street preacher.

Richard:  Richard.

Jason:  Richard. And you’re out here giving out information on the street. What is the information you’re giving out about?

Richard:  Well, basically we want to tell people that it’s more than church, it’s more than religion, it’s a relationship with God through the Son of God Jesus Christ.

Jason:  Are you guys associated with a church yourselves?

Richard:  No. We’re just street ministers. We minister wherever the Spirit of God leads us. We go and awesome things are done to the Glory of God.

Jason:  And I saw that you’ve made some friends out here today. Some people have been receptive. Do you ever meet people who are really upset about what you’re doing?

Richard:  Occasionally we do. We get people that will cuss at us, people that will scream and yell at us, spit, but I’ve never been hit by it.

Jason:  Oh wow.

Richard:  Praise God. Dodged it.

Jason:  And what made you decide to take your message to the streets instead of, you know, to a pulpit?

Richard:  Right. Well, that’s kind of a long subject, but the bottom line is we’re both called….We believe we’re called of God. He made it true to our hearts that we are to do this and we do it joyfully because we know that we were created to do this.

Jason:  Wow.

Richard:  Yeah.

Jason:  And so do you have any major success stories? Like, people who come back and say, “You really changed my life.”

Richard:  Yes. Occasionally we find people coming to Christ, rededications, people rededicating their lives to Christ. Lots of good things are done for the Glory of God and it’s awesome. It’s awesome to see it.

Jason:  Alright. Can I get you to give me a high five and say, “English, baby!”

Discussion

Richard and his friend believe it’s their calling to help people learn about Jesus. They don’t work for a church, they simply stand on the street and encourage people have a relationship with God.

Sometimes people welcome their message and pray with them. Other times they become annoyed or angry and throw things or spit. But Richard and his friend believe they have to do this.

What’s your calling? Do people stand outside and promote their spiritual beliefs where you live? Do you like to see them or do they bother you?

I agree with nad1a. Jesus did the same with two simple saying "Love God and Love your neighbor" and proved the loved by the famous scripture "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16

Out of all the callings in life, recruiting people to be the best in this life and eternity is the best. In whatever way we do this, we should be sure that we have direct instructions fomr our living Creator.

Wow, thats why I like the USA. A lot of colourfully people in this melting pot -there.

But I am a little bit scary of fundamentalism church people in that country (in other too -sure). Are these guys at the street creationists? In Europe we have to laugh about the power of creationists in USA. Thats very weird for us here in Europe and a little bit dangerous for children in schools somewhere in USA – I think.

I am a muslim and I disagree with them, christian preachers.  I have seen those people, who claim they are called by God, on the street and and sometimes they even knock on my apartment door.  But I always tell them I am not interested and simply shut the door.  One day I put a sign on my apartment door.  It says "Do NOT kock on this door if you are selling or pormoting your belief. Otherwise, you will get hurt by a pregnant women."

If someone is advertising something to someone els who is not interested, why not just KNOCK IT OFF.

The street preachers are the people who'll be not forgotten by Jesus Christ. They try to help people and guide them through their preaches.

I salute the street preachers. More power and Godbless.

I hope to serve God like them someday.

they're doing exactly what Jesus was doing in his days and if he hadn't done that, neither of us would have known about him at all. And if it is their calling to do that and educate people about God, they're doing the right thing. It's the same thing that teachers do, they share their knowledge, they don't just keep it for themselves. Then you have the right to accept or reject it. Noone forces you.
