Study Music

Date: May 25 2009

Themes: School, Work

Grammar: Phrasal Verbs

Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

When you have a big exam to study for, it’s good to have all the help you can get. But not everyone agrees about what’s most helpful when it comes to study music.

Some people find all types of music distracting when they’re trying to study. Others like to have some background noise to help them focus. They might choose classical music to calm them, dance music to keep them energized, or punk to help them get their aggression out. Listen to the dialog to find out what kind of study music Ella and Mason like.

Dialog

Ella:  Do you listen to music when you study or read?

Mason:  I like to listen to music while I’m working. But nothing too distracting. I get really easily distracted.

Ella:  Yeah, for me, I can’t listen to anything with words, you know? So I always stick to classical or things that are just like…just sounds.

Mason:  Classical’s definitely good. I remember back in high school my parents would always say that Mozart would be great for…It was scientifically proven to make you smarter, or do better on tests. And that always kind of stuck with me. So I listen to a lot of Mozart when I’m working.

Ella:  Yeah. That sounds good. You know what you shouldn’t listen to? Lil Wayne. Supposedly it lowers your IQ if you listen to him while studying.

Mason:  I believe that. But is that proven?

Ella:  There was a study that came out. Just letting you know.

Mason:  So knowing that you can’t listen to stuff that distracts you, do you generally like to have something going on?

Ella:  It depends where I am. If I’m at a coffee shop then I’ll put on some headphones and drown out the noise. But if I’m in my room I prefer it to be quiet. But if you want to do it, do it, right?

Mason:  Absolutely.

Discussion

Mason likes to listen to music while he works, as long as it isn’t too distracting. Both he and Ella think that classical music is the best study music. Mason even thinks that listening to Mozart while he studies might make him smarter. Unlike Lil Wayne, which supposedly makes you dumber.

When she’s at home, Ella thinks it’s better not to have any music on at all while she’s studying. But sometimes when she studies at a coffee shop she listens to music on her headphones so she won’t have to hear any of the other distracting noises around her.

Do you listen to music while you study? What makes the best study music?

Yes, I like listening to music when studying.

Most of the time, it depends, if I'm studying English, doing some vocabulary test, I need music, if I can easily tell the meaning of a word even with  distraction, that means I really remember this word. If I'm doing some easy work, like typing copies, I need music to relax, or the work would be very boring. But if I'm trying to resolve some maths problem, I need to focus, then I don't need music.

And music with or without words, that's no difference for me.

Yes! I like to listen to music when I study. Silence would make me distract on the contrary. Background sound helps me more focus. Like Ella and Mason, classical music is what I prefer to.
