Before she had her twins, Max and Emme, Jennifer Lopez often spoke about how much she wanted to be a mother. But she and her husband, Marc Anthony, had a hard time conceiving. They tried for two years to get pregnant without any luck. It seemed like it might not be in the cards for them to have children together.

But Jennifer finally became pregnant in 2007. And soon she learned that there was more than one baby in the cards for her. Her twins were born in February of 2008. Now Jennifer says she would like to have more children. But since it was so difficult to get pregnant the first time, she doesn’t know if it will happen again.

You’ve probably guessed by now that in the cards means destined or likely to be. But can you guess where the expression comes from?

One way of telling someone’s fortune is by reading his cards. Fortune tellers use a special deck of tarot cards to predict what is going to happen to themselves or others. Whatever appears in your cards, that is what will happen to you in the future.
