Revenge is sweet, especially in Quentin Tarantino’s new movie, Inglourious Basterds.

In the film, the Basterds are a team of Jewish men who go around killing lots and lots of Nazis. They get some help from a beautiful French-Jewish starlet, whose entire family was murdered by the Germans. The plot isn’t exactly a true retelling of history, but Jason thinks the movie offers a better version of reality. Listen to him and Devan discuss the glory of Inglourious Basterds.

Jason:  You know what movie I want to live in?

Devan:  What?

Jason:  Inglourious Basterds.

Devan:  You want to live in that movie?

Jason:  It’s two and a half hours long and I just didn’t want it to be over. It was so glorious!

Devan:  But do you really want to live in World War II?

Jason:  No, but I just want to live in the world in which eight guys can just get away with killing Nazis, you know, at will.

Devan:  But they had that officer following their every step and he was really scary. I wouldn’t want to mess with that guy.

Jason:  Yeah, that guy was a really scary villain. No, I just think it’s really cool that those guys could get away with that, you know, that there’s this band of eight Jews who are just so mad that they just go throughout Nazi Germany doing whatever they want. I feel like that didn’t really happen, and that never really happens, and it’s just a cool world of vigilante justice where the villains get their just desserts.

Devan:  Yeah, absolutely. I think that if things had really gone down the way they went down in that movie, that would’ve been pretty awesome. As cool as that movie was, though, I wouldn’t want to live during that period of time.

Jason:  Only if it went down like that.

In Inglourious Basterds, a group of Jews gets revenge on the Nazis. Jason likes the idea of the Nazis getting their just desserts. He says he wishes things had actually happened that way. He thought the world of the movie was really cool.

Devan thinks it would be hard to live during World War II. She also thinks it would be scary to be pursued by a Nazi officer like the villain in the movie.

Do you think revenge is sweet? If you could live in any time period, which one would you choose?

Is the revenge sweet? NO, Not at all. That would be a painful experience.

Furthermore, revenge yields another revenges. The real cool thing is this. revenges should be ended by forgiveness like Jesus.

Yes i had seen this movie and Mr. Tarantino is one of the best in his subject. I like his movies with the strange dialogs and stories. Inglorious Basterds was not so close at reality but i can imagine that people like the feeling "revenge is sweet". Its like in the movie "Kill Bill" and "Death Proof" and others – they are also strong feelings of revenge in it. I liked the combination of '70 Italo-Western with Nazi-Story in WWII. All big Nazis did dieing in a movietheatre. Thats glourious cinema. And hey, by the way: i think its absolutely right – Germans are using only thumb, index finger and middle finger to order three beers and not index finger, middle finger and ring finger. So this scene was not a big surprise for Germans. Laughing

I have a questionabout the Vocabulary. I'm confused with the phrase:just desserts  ,why does it mean 'get what you deserve'? Should it be'just deserts'?

It's a complicated question about revenge…if I took part in events of World War II I would say yes, revenge is sweet because of psychology (all situations happend in that period were too tough, rude, terrible) that's why I could do whatever to save a life and of course to revenge my enemies.About film I enloyed it…especially the end when all heads of Nazis were killed)...
