Steph: Hey, Sara. You wanna go to Mount Saint Helens?
Sara: Um, maybe. But isn’t it erupting?
Steph: Well, I don’t know. Ya know, they’ve been saying that it’s going to and they shut down the visitor center, but I think it’s ok now.
Sara: Really? Why do you wanna go?
Steph: I don’t know. I mean, you could go see the steam coming out or maybe see some magma.
Sara: That’s true. What’s magma?
Steph: Magma is liquid lava.
Sara: Oh wow!
Steph: Yeah. The red stuff that comes out of mountains.
Sara: That would be really cool to see. But what if we got stuck or something out there? I mean what if it blew up and we were right there?
Steph: That would be pretty scary. I guess we could bring some water with us?
Sara: Water would be good. Maybe we should bring a cell phone too, just in case.
Steph: That’s a really good idea. Let’s be prepared.
Sara: Ok. Let’s do it!
Steph: OK!

What would you do if there were a volcano erupting near your town or city? Would you go and see it or would you stay far away? I grew up in Hawai’i. There was an active volcano erupting pretty much the whole time I lived there. When I was a kid, we would take friends, family and other visitors to see it. That was a lot of fun, but also pretty dangerous! That was really living on the edge!
