Last weekend was the Fourth of July, and what better way is there to celebrate the birth of the U.S.A. than going on a picnic? Whether it’s at the beach or in the park, Americans love to combine soaking up some sun with eating some grub. Since the weather is usually nice on the Fourth, a lot of families begin their celebrations with an outdoor barbecue, potluck, or picnic.

A picnic can be a family affair, with food and games for the kids. Or you can have a classy, romantic picnic with a bottle of wine and tasty treats in a fancy basket. A picnic can also mean hanging out at the park with your friends, tossing a football around and munching on some snacks. Find out what kind of picnics Jeff and Devan like to have.

Devan:  So now that the weather is getting nice, I really want to go on a picnic. Do you like picnics?

Jeff:  Yeah, why not? I don’t know, I can’t say I’ve been on a proper picnic.

Devan:  No? You don’t bring like the basket and make food and lay everything out on a blanket?

Jeff:  Maybe I’ve done that before. But as opposed to food and a blanket, it was more like champagne and soccer balls.

Devan:  Yeah. Just go to the park and have some champagne. Did you like spread out a blanket and everything though, so you could lie out in the park?

Jeff:  A few times that’s happened. Usually at the beach. Picnics at the beach, does that count?

Devan:  Yeah, that counts. I just like…I always like to pack a lunch ‘cause I want to stay at the park or at the beach as long as I can, and I get hungry, so I always, you know, prepare some sandwiches and maybe bring some beer.

Jeff:  It’s nice to have something to munch on.

Devan:  Yeah. Watermelon. Watermelon’s my favorite picnic food.

Jeff:  That’s a good one. Any kind of melon.

Now that it’s summer, Devan can’t wait to go on a picnic. Jeff hasn’t been on a lot of picnics, but he does like to spend time hanging out outside when the weather is nice. He has had more picnics on the beach than in the park.

Devan always likes to bring some food when she goes to the park or the beach. That way, when she gets hungry, she can have a picnic. Fruit is a common food to bring on a picnic. Beer or wine can be fun to have on a picnic, too, as long as you don’t get in trouble. In many places, it’s illegal to drink alcohol in public spaces. So maybe you’d be better off sticking with watermelon!

Do you like to go on picnics? What is your favorite picnic food?

When the weather is getting nice (it happens rather rare in St Petersburg)I really like to go on a picnic. We always pack a lunch, our traditional snacks are fruits, french chicken, boil potatoes and eggs. Cool

Sometimes we prepare barbecue or shish-kebab/ Do you know what is it – shish -kebab?It's really tasty.

And our traditional family affair -to go to the country. Summer house and barbecue. Does that count?
