There is something irresistible about the story of Robin Hood. What’s not to love about a friendly outlaw who steals from the rich to give to the poor? In the classic Disney movie, he was portrayed as a cunning, lovable fox. There was also a comedy made about him called Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
But there’s nothing funny about the new Robin Hood movie. This prequel to the traditional Robin Hood tale is full of blood, gore, and epic battle scenes. Find out if Amy and Beren plan to check it out.

Amy: Have you seen the ads for this new Robin Hood movie?
Beren: I haven’t. I’ve only seen the poster, like I saw a giant Russell Crowe head on the side of a building. I had no idea what it was for. But it’s the new Robin Hood movie.
Amy: Yeah. It definitely seems different from the older Robin Hoods that are, you know, like a little more like the softer, gentler Robin Hood. This seems like the…
Beren: Does it look violent?
Amy: It looks like, yeah, the kind of bad-ass Robin Hood.
Beren: Whoa.
Amy: And apparently it’s actually a prequel to the Robin Hood story, like what he was doing before he started robbing from the rich and giving to the poor.
Beren: That’s so weird, because it goes against everything I know and think of about Robin Hood, ‘cause he’s supposed to be this kind of nonviolent, like almost pacifist, I guess.
Amy: That’s true. Was Robin Hood a hero to you growing up, like do you find that idea of robbing from the rich and giving to the poor sort of romantic?
Beren: Yeah, like maybe a little romantic. I don’t know, I…I don’t know, I haven’t thought about Robin Hood since the Disney cartoon, really. And mostly about the song, so…
Amy: Well, now you’ve got a chance to revisit.
Beren: I think I’m gonna go see the Robin Hood prequel.

Amy and Beren are both familiar with the traditional Robin Hood story, about a man who robs from the rich and gives to the poor. They have seen earlier movies about Robin Hood, which weren’t violent. So it is surprising to them that the new Robin Hood, with Russell Crowe, looks like it has a lot of blood and fighting.
The new Robin Hood is also a prequel to the traditional story. That means it tells what happened before the story we already know. It gives background and history on the classic character of Robin Hood.
Is it ever OK to rob from the rich in order to help the poor?
