If there is a celebrity with more star power than Tom Cruise, it’s Angelina Jolie. Between her high-profile relationship with Brad Pitt, her good looks and her acting chops, she draws huge crowds to whatever movie she makes. So when Tom decided not to star in the new film Salt, the producers got someone even better, Angelina.
It’s pretty impressive that Angelina took over a role originally written for a man in this fast-paced action movie. And it’s even more impressive that she did all her own stunts for the film. Could Tom Cruise do better than that?
Salt is about a CIA agent who may or may not have betrayed her country. But as you’re about to hear, Beren and Marni don’t really care what the movie’s about. They just want to see it because Angie’s in it.

Marni: So Beren, have you seen the new Angelina Jolie movie, Salt?
Beren: I have not. It looks awesome, though.
Marni: I agree. And I’m very intrigued by it, because, I don’t know if you know this, but the title role was actually written for Tom Cruise.
Beren: I actually heard that, yeah. I read that he opted not to do it because he thought it was too close to Mission Impossible. He thought it was a rip-off of his franchise he already had created.
Marni: Sure. And so yeah, I think it’s interesting that they kinda recreated the role for a female, and so I’m very curious to see it. I know she did all her own stunts in the movie, which I think is really impressive.
Beren: That is very impressive.
Marni: Yeah. And I’m a total sucker for the whole spy, are you a double agent, you know, the sort of intrigue of that. So I think it’ll be an interesting film.
Beren: It looks a little like the Bourne series, like the Jason Bourne movies, where she’s on the run from her own agency ‘cause they think she’s a traitor. I don’t know, I don’t really know what the plot is, but I’ll watch pretty much any Angelina Jolie movie, I think she’s a great actress.
Marni: I agree, I think she’s a great actress, so let’s make a date to go see it.
Beren: Alright.

Discussion
Sometimes movies are written with specific actors in mind. The writers of Salt wanted Tom Cruise to play the main character. But Tom decided that Salt was too similar to his Mission Impossible movies, since both movies are about spies. When Tom didn’t take the role, it went to Angelina Jolie instead.
Beren and Marni both think Angelina Jolie is a great actress. They want to see Salt because they like to see anything that has her in it. Beren thinks the movie sounds similar to another movie about a spy, The Bourne Identity. Maybe Salt will become a three-film series like the Mission Impossible and Bourne movies.
Do you think Angelina Jolie is a good actress? Do you think Salt will be as popular as Mission Impossible or the Bourne movies?
