Lesson No. 86 – Explanation for a Native Speaker’s Private Conversation – Part 4:

For anyone just joining this forum, the goal of participating in the lesson is to re-write a conversation among native speaker’s using the U.S. Presidential Election as a platform. The first sentence is the original statement and the keyword is in bold type. The sentence below it is my re-write into Standard English which also is in bold type.

Curtis: It was a bombshell to hear that Donald Trump won the Presidential Election.

Curtis: It was totally unexpected to hear that Donald Trump won the Presidential election.

Dee Dee: I didn’t think he was going to cross the finish line. Girlfriend took a blow!

Dee Dee: I didn’t think he would even finish. Hillary lost big time.

Sheila: At the end of the day it was the voters who decided who would be president.

Sheila: After all is said and done, it was the voters that decided the election.

Shaun: All during the campaign Trump was just preaching to the choir but in the end it was a big choir that was incognito.

Shaun: All during the campaign Trump were only talking to his supporters but in the end there were a large number of voters who agreed with him but were in the shadows.

Curtis: Yeah, and nobody predicted that it would play out with him winning.

Curtis: Yes, and nobody predicted it would end up with him winning.

Dee Dee: The democrats tried to stay the course but lost to the voters under the radar.

Dee Dee: The democrats tried to keep their strategy but lost to voters that were not obvious.

Sheila: It looked like Hillary had the wind at her back but the outcome was such a surprise.

Sheila: It looked like Hillary had the advantage but in the end, it was a surprise.

Shaun: Well, it is what it is and we’ll have to roll with the Donald for the next 4 years.

Shaun: Well, it is what it is and we’ll have to deal with the Donald for the next 4 years.

The use of these phrases to native speakers is as natural as breathing and we don’t give it a second thought about if the audience understands. If you want to be fluent in English in the American culture you’ll have to gain experience and spend the time learning.

The key is to make a vocabulary list of the phrases you do not understand and learn the meaning and the context they’re used in. If you are persistent in this activity, you may surprise yourself of your progress.

I intend to write one more lesson in this activity unless there is a request to do more.

Here are the words for the final lesson which I intend to post in 1 week.

1. Shake things up

2. Chime in

3. High five

4. Hit the ground running

5. All bets are off

6. A landslide

7. To seal this deal

Surprise Question:

After Donald Trump won the election, President Obama was talking to a crowd of Hillary supporters informing the crowd to support Donald Trump as president. The crowd was beginning to become unruly and President Obama kept using the phrase, “Hold up, hold up, hold up!”

What did President Obama mean by using this phrase?

Easypeasy, Fatemeh, and Amira, you all did a superb job in your re-write. Compare my re-write to yours to help your understanding. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

For everyone else, I invite you to come out of the shadows and try your best to participate. We learn by doing. :)

Responses to re-writes and posts.

Pdfdumps, you have the basic understanding of the phrase “Heavy on the young” meaning.

Neginb, thanks for sharing your opinion. As you can see from the dialogue and what currently is happening in the U.S. there are some strong opinions. Even President-elect Donald Trump strongly said the U.S. election system was “rigged” and also doesn’t trust America along with many of his supporters.

However, it does matter who the President of the U.S. is, because many countries are affected by the decisions made. It may not always be that way but it is now. I appreciate for you to express your feelings. Add the lesson words to your vocabulary.

Fatemeh, thanks for offering your rebuttal which offers balance to the conversation. There are always at least two sides to a story and it’s informative to hear your side. Your re-write was right on course, you didn’t rely on luck but on your research which paid off. Once I offer my re-write you can compare it with yours. Thanks for your effort.

Easypeasy, it’s always good to hear from you. Your re-write was also right on course. Concerning the phrase “at the end of the day” you are correct in your assessment that it is used at the beginning of a statement that includes a main point that follows. However, it can be used at the end of a statement depending on how the sentence is constructed. My re-write will help shed some light on the remaining phrases.

Amira, your persistence in researching out lessons on a regular basis has paid off in the smooth flow of your writings. In the case of the phrase, “at the end of the day” it means “in the final analysis” or ”after all is said and done” then the main point is expressed. Nevertheless, it’s superb.

Everyone who submitted a re-write did a very good job and as a result you are able to hear English speakers say these phrases and you’ll be knowledgeable about the meaning.

I intend to post my explanation of the lesson by this weekend. I thank you all for your research efforts.

Curtis: It was a bombshell to hear that Donald Trump won the Presidential Election.

Curtis: It was very unexpected and shocking to hear that Donald Trump won the Presidential election.

Dee Dee: I didn’t think he was going to cross the finish line. Girlfriend took a blow!

Dee Dee: I didn’t think he was going to win. Clinton got hurt! (because she defeated)

Sheila: At the end of the day it was the voters who decided who would be president.

Sheila: After all, it is up to the voters to decide who is their president.

Shaun: All during the campaign Trump was just preaching to the choir but in the end it was a big choir that was incognito.

Shaun: All during the campaign Trump seemed to be leader of a small group of people who had the same idea with him but after it turned out that the group was so large number of people maybe in disguise or maybe without letting others know to whom they were going to vote. (I think it refers to hidden and silent voters!)

Curtis: Yeah, and nobody predicted that it would play out with him winning.

Curtis: Yeah, and nobody predicted that it would find out with him winning/nobody thought that he would win.

Dee Dee: The democrats tried to stay the course but lost to the voters under the radar.

Dee Dee:The democrats tried to be the top in the survy and statistics but they were unaware of many missed votes in their estimates.

Sheila: It looked like Hillary had the wind at her back but the outcome was such a surprise.

Sheila: It looked like Hillary had a lot of supporters and she had so many votes which could make her winner but the outcome was vice versa.

Shaun: Well, it is what it is and we’ll have to roll with the Donald for the next 4 years.

Shaun: Well, in the end of the story, Donald Trump is our president for the next 4 years and we should deal with that.

I understood the dialogue, but I am not sure if I re-wrote it correctly:

Curtis: It was a great surprise to hear that Donald Trump won the Presidential Election.

Dee Dee: I didn’t think he was going to win the elections. Clinton seemed to be more successful.

Sheila: In the end it was the voters who decided who would be president. (The phrase “at the end of the day” is used before a sentence that contains the most important information. In this case: the voter’s choises was more crucial than the fact that Clinton seemingly was taking the lead)

Shaun: All during the campaign Trump was talking to the people who already supported him but in the end these were the big amount of people who rather kept their decision to vote for Trump to themselves.

Curtis: Yes, and nobody predicted that it would turn out him winning.

Dee Dee: The democrats tried to gain as many supporters as possible but lost voters and didn’t even notice it.

Sheila: It looked like Hilary Clinton had the best chances to win but the outcome was such a surprise.

Shaun: Well, it is what it is and we’ll have to deal with Donald Trump for the next 4 years.

Corrections are very welcome

I’m not sure Negin, and honestly I think it would be very superficial if you think that all what Trump said before the election is completely true. I know many people in the U.S. may have gotten fed up with politics in Washington but in a similar condition we experienced a person as a president for 8 years with a lot of difficulties and chaos in everything from buying a simple bread to the international decisions he made. A person very likely to Trump in his ideas, his looks(!) and his public reputation. Time told us that all his populistic view and speeches were just a tool to achieve the power, and his incompetence for ruling of a country finally found out. Lots of losses had been all what we gained and worse is the lost dignity in the world and in our international relations.

Still, I wonder how you can easily think in this way? After 8 years of misery :(

Hi Mr Altson,

thanks for this good conversation, i agree with Dee Dee actually, i didn’t think he was going to finish the line.

i did check depate and could get many importnt things. well i dont want to judge about them but i think Trump is more honest than Clinton. i completly know he has insult women or have done something wrong some years ago, but i think his words were true in some important things, like when he replyed: “It’s just words, folks. It’s just words. Those words, I’ve been hearing them for many years.” Clinton is a women who talks nicely but actually she fails when she tries to do what she said before. for example Egreement between Iran and America is just words on paper, Clinton wasn’t honest. America wasn’t honest! Iranian people never can trust to America ! they’ve boycotted Iran and doesn’t let to even use some foreinger drugs so her words on depate, i think were just a kind of deception. How ever i don’t support or confirm Trump too, cause he thinks Iran is a terrorist state !!! It’s clear to anyone Iran isn’t a terrorist state ,we proved it when Iraq attacked to Iran. i can oath my father’s cousin became martyr in Suriya two years ago ,when he was fighting against terrorist like Daesh, so generely i can say it doesn’t important to Iran who won in this course, IRAN NEVER TRUST TO AMERICA !

Lesson No. 86 – A Native Speaker’s Private Conversation – Part 4:

The majority of these words (that are bolded) were taken directly from the conversations of news reporters and commentators discussing the U.S. Presidential campaign on CNN (news channel.) Your challenge is to re-write the conversation. The names below are a fictitious group of native speakers talking about the candidates.

Curtis: It was a bombshell to hear that Donald Trump won the Presidential Election.

Dee Dee: I didn’t think he was going to cross the finish line. Girlfriend took a blow!

Sheila: At the end of the day it was the voters who decided who would be president.

Shaun: All during the campaign Trump was just preaching to the choir but in the end it was a big choir that was incognito.

Curtis: Yeah, and nobody predicted that it would play out with him winning.

Dee Dee: The democrats tried to stay the course but lost to the voters under the radar.

Sheila: It looked like Hillary had the wind at her back but the outcome was such a surprise.

Shaun: Well, it is what it is and we’ll have to roll with the Donald for the next 4 years.

Fatemeh, you’re welcome and thanks for your feedback. It’s good that you were able to learn some new words. It’s understandable that you were not able to understand all of the phrases. How could you understand them unless you were exposed to them?

That is the purpose of the dialogue lessons combined with the Englishbaby lessons to expose the readers to non-standard English; otherwise students of English will be uninformed to native speakers’ regular conversation.

Here is the answer to your question of why Dee Dee called Hillary “Girlfriend.”“Girlfriend” is an urban street word used in a generic sense of a female addressing or referring to another female in an affectionate or supportive manner.

Remember, a word can have many meanings, the context determines which meaning is used. The key to learning these nuances of the language is by exposure and active pursuit to learn unfamiliar phrases, idioms, and slang that are used by native speakers.

The encouraging thing is anyone can learn it with perseverance, I’ve witnessed it from Iranians here in the U.S.

Lesson No. 85- Explanation of a Native Speaker’s Conversation-Part 3:

Someone may wonder why spend the time to learn anything other than Standard or Academic English? It’s a reasonable and logical question and thought.

However, the reality is the vast majority of native speakers do not only speak strictly Standard or Academic English. For one thing, you cannot express emotion as effectively as you can by using a word or phrase that you can understand through imagery.

Imagery is from the word “image” and is when a person uses descriptive words and phrases to produce a “mental picture” to express a thought or make use of imagination. Idioms, phrases, and slang all produce similar effects.

Well, without any further ado, let’s get into the explanation of a native speaker’s private conversation. The original text is written first, the re-written version is below in italics. The phrase word is in bold type.

Curtis: Despite what happens in November, if you drill down on the Republican side, the down ticket candidates are distancing themselves from Trump.

Curtis: Separate from what happens in November, if you look at the candidates below the president/vice-president on the ballot, they do not want to be associated with Trump.

Dee Dee: Check this out, when Trump met with the Mexican President and had the opportunity to bring up about his wall he wants to put up on the US/Mexican border, he choked!

Dee Dee: Pay attention to this point, when Trump met with the Mexican President and had the opportunity to bring up about his wall he wants to put up on the US/Mexican border, he froze up (didn’t speak about it).

Sheila: Yeah, and now many people who were not voting, have registered to vote and coming out from the shadows.

Sheila: Yes, and now many people who were not voting have come out of hiding and registered to vote (against Trump.)

Shaun: Even though Trump is shifting gears into the political big league, his lack of political experience may come to haunt him.

Shaun: Even though Trump has changed from business to the big-time political area, his lack of political experience may cause him problems.

Curtis: And he’s playing chicken with the American public by saying any and everything and still think people will vote for him.

Curtis: And he’s using dangerous tactics with the American public by saying offensive things about people and still believes people will vote for him.

Dee Dee: Trump has been happy-go-lucky all along but the bottom line is it’s not over until it’s over.

Dee Dee: Trump has been carefree from the beginning but the main thing is that it’s not over until it’s over!

Sheila: In the meantime, Donald has to up his game in his demeanor if he intends to win over the undecided voters. Other than his supporters, everyone else has thrown him under the bus, big time.

Sheila: In the meantime, Donald has to improve drastically in his demeanor if he intends to win the votes of the undecided voters. Other than his supporters, everybody else has rejected him in a big way.

Shaun: It’s too late for Donald to up his game in his demeanor, he is who he is. As a result, I predict he’ll ride off into the sunset after the election.

Shaun: It’s too late for Donald to improve his demeanor, he is who he is. In the end, I think he’ll go off the scene.

End of explanation

I was watching CNN today and wrote down at least 7 phrases that were used within 10 minutes in normal conversation. Therefore I intend to do at least another 2 parts to this dialogue lesson using this opportunity to expose you to these phrases.

I’ll give you a heads up for the phrases to be used in the next dialogue lesson below.

1. A bombshell

2. Cross the finish line

3. At the end of the day

4. Preaching to the choir

5. Playout

6. Stay the course

7. Wind at her back

You can use the internet and/or this link http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/ to assist you in identifying the meaning of the phrases. I intend to post this next lesson by next weekend.

Julito and Amira, you’ve both done an excellent job in re-writing the native speaker’s conversation. I’ll give a little time for others who may want to post their answers before I write my detailed explanation.

Amira, I will answer your question directly;

1. Down ticket candidates= On the voting ballot all of the candidates who are running for office are listed. At the top of the ballot is the Office of President/Vice-President, then the candidates for Senate, House of Representatives, State Senator, State Assembly seat and then all of the local candidates.

All of the political office positions under the Office of President/Vice-President are considered “down ticket offices” because they are of lower priority than the president.

2. Shifting gears= This is an automotive phrase which means to make a change of something. In the dialogue, Shaun is saying that Trump is changing from a business career to a political career.

3. Happy-go-lucky= This phrase means to have a carefree attitude and not considering the consequences.

Thanks for your request concerning these phrases. This is how you learn by being pro-active to seek out the answers.

Lesson No. 84-Explanation of a Native Speaker’s Private Conversation-Part 2:

Justina, you made a good effort in paraphrasing this native speaker’s conversation which can be a difficult task without first-hand experience.

The purpose of these lessons is to give non-native speakers exposure to non-standard English that is regularly spoken. I’ll answer your question about why Hillary is called “Girlfriend” in the lesson explanation.

The Explanation is in italics below the lesson text:

Curtis: Shaun you got that right; we’ll find out who the winner is in November but before then more shoes are going to drop on Trump.

Curtis: Shaun you are so right; we’ll find out who the winner is in November but before then more troubling things are going to happen to Trump.

Note: The phrase “shoes are going to drop” is from the root phrase“wait for the other shoe to drop.” The meaning is to anticipate something negative to happen.

Dee DeeGirlfriend has a pass with all of the drama going down with Donald but it’s still too early for her to take a victory lap.

Dee Dee: Hillary’s troubles are overlooked because of the negative activity happening with Donald but it’s too early for her to claim victory.

Note: Dee Dee used ”Girlfriend” as a slang word for Hillary. Girlfriend is used for emphasis by a female referring to another female. This is urban street talk.

Sheila: Trump has pulled out all the stops and has taken shooting from the hip to new level.

Sheila: Trump is doing everything he can (to get elected) and is responding to things in an unacceptable way.

Shaun: Yeah, one of his accusers said that he was straight up bullying.

Shaun: Yes, one of his accusers said that he was bullying others directly.

Curtis: If the Donald keeps this up, Hillary may have a slam dunk in November.

Curtis: If Donald continues in this way, Hillary may win in a landslide (by a large margin.)

Dee Dee: If Trump loses, he may go off emotionally; it doesn’t matter, he can fly his bird out of Dodge.

Dee Dee: If Trump loses (the election) he may react angrily; whatever, he can just fly his Trump airplane out of town.

Sheila: Even after he’s out of Dodge, his so-called party has more than enough mess to clean up.

Sheila: Even after he leaves town, his supposed party will have to do a lot to repair their much damaged reputation.

Shaun: Yeah, forever and a day!

Shaun: Yes, it will take a long, long time (to repair their reputation.)

Please note that you will find similarities between all of the writings that were posted. In English you can say the same thing in more than one way.

This week I watched the last debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton and wrote down some idioms that they used.

As a result, I intend to write a Part 3 lesson using the actual words they used on the debate with the same characters in the lesson.

To help you with the upcoming lesson, I’ll provide the idioms and phrases which will be in the next lesson:

1. Drill down

2. He choked

3. Out from the shadows

4. Big league

5. Playing chicken

6. The bottom line

7. Up our game

If you research these words before I post the lesson, it will be easier to understand the lesson which I intend to post in about 1 week.

If you have any questions on this lesson, please feel free to ask. Carry on!

No, it’s really difficult to understand the conversation, without dictionary it’s real hard.

Julito and Amira, you’ve both done a good job on paraphrasing a native speaker’s conversation. I realize it’s not an easy task because this is not the kind of English that is taught in school. You basically have to be in the American culture or have a keen ear to take the time to understand certain idioms, phrases, and slang.

Englishbaby is a source of this kind of information that is needful if a person wants to understand the English that native speakers use such as is heard on CNN and other English speaking sources.

In the next day or so I intend to give my explanation of the lesson after some others have an opportunity to post their responses.

Thanks for taking the time to research your answers, they were very good.
