When your alarm clock rings, what do you do? Do you roll over and hit the snooze button? Or do you jump out of bed, ready to start another day?
If you find it easy to wake up and enjoy rising with the sun, you must be a morning person. Luckily, for the rest of us, there’s always coffee. Find out if Marni and Mason are morning people.

Marni: Gosh, Mason. You know, I am just not really a morning person.
Mason: No?
Marni: No. I’m having a hard time getting going. You know, I don’t like the “rise and shine!” I’m not perky. I just kinda get out of bed and I trudge to the bathroom.
Mason: How many alarms do you set for yourself to get out of bed? And/or do you hit the snooze button?
Marni: I only set one alarm, and I do hit the snooze button.
Mason: Yeah, see, I usually wake up anywhere from five to 30 minutes before my alarm, which is less than ideal because I never wake up right when I want to, and then you have a choice, right? You can embrace the fact that you’re mostly awake and get up early, make yourself a cup of coffee, read a paper, whatever. Or you can maybe go back to sleep, but for me, when I get woken up in the middle of a deep sleep, I’m just a wreck for the rest of the day.
Marni: Yeah, I just have a hard time getting a head start. I’ve kind of had to become a morning person being in the teaching profession, obviously. So I’m making myself go to bed earlier and earlier. But I just love staying up late. I’m a total night owl.
Mason: Can you force yourself to go to bed early?
Marni: Yeah, I have found some coping mechanisms. I make a lot of chamomile tea, maybe if it’s been a particularly hard day…
Mason: Couple bottles of wine?
Marni: Well, sure.

Discussion
Marni is tired. She hasn’t been able to wake up yet. She dislikes getting up early and is not a morning person.
Mason is more of a morning person than Marni. In fact, he doesn’t even need an alarm to wake up. He usually wakes up naturally, before his alarm rings.
It’s necessary for Marni to get up early because of her job. She tries to go to sleep early at night so that it will be easier for her to get up when her alarm rings. But she prefers to stay up late. She is a night owl.
Are you a morning person? Is it easy for you to wake up in the morning? Do you use an alarm clock?
