The Beach Boys have grown up. This surfer rock band from California had dozens of hit songs in the 1960s. At one point, the Beach Boys even rivaled the Beatles for the most popular band in the world. But the band’s main songwriter, Brian Wilson, struggled with drug abuse and mental health problems, and things started to go downhill for the Beach Boys beginning in the 1970s. Now they’ve reunited for a new tour celebrating the band’s 50th anniversary. Hear Jason explain to Amy why he can’t wait to attend a Beach Boys concert.

Jason: So, after 20 years of not playing together, the Beach Boys are doing a world tour! How excited are you?
Amy: Not that excited. The Beach Boys are…
Jason: Timeless? I know. They’re amazing.
Amy: I was gonna say kind of old fashioned and corny.
Jason: What?
Amy: Yeah.
Jason: Those harmonies, like that’s the backbone of Western music, you know?
Amy: But they’re just always so upbeat and sunny. The songs…I feel like it’s too fluffy. There’s not enough depth, you know?
Jason: Oh, you just haven’t gone deep enough in their catalog because, you know, like Pet Sounds, that’s a pretty experimental album.
Amy: I’ve heard that. But I’m just too put off by everything I’ve heard already to really want to go any further.
Jason: Well, do you like going to the beach?
Amy: I like going to the beach, sure, but I don’t know…I don’t necessarily want to listen to the Beach Boys while I’m at the beach.
Jason: Wow. The Beach Boys are playing in my head when I’m at the beach, no matter what.
Amy: Will you be going to one of their concerts?
Jason: Oh yeah, and I talked to someone who’s been to one, and she said it was unbelievable. Everyone of all ages were dancing, ‘cause it’s their 50th anniversary tour, so there’s people in their 70s who saw them when they were in their 20s.

Discussion
Jason tells Amy about the Beach Boys’ reunion tour. They haven’t played together in 20 years. Now they are reuniting for a world tour to celebrate their 50th anniversary as a band.
Although Jason is really excited about the Beach Boys’ new tour, Amy isn’t interested. She says she finds their music to be corny and too upbeat. Jason thinks she just hasn’t listened to enough Beach Boys songs.
Do you like the Beach Boys? What kind of music do you like to listen to at the beach? Will you be going to any concerts this year?
