There’s nothing worse than going to school with a big pimple on your face. Some kids try covering acne with make-up or bandages. Others ignore the situation and try acting oblivious. Luckily, almost all teenagers have acne because puberty makes it difficult to avoid. Everyone has the same problem, so that makes life easier.

People will go to great lengths to stop getting pimples. Medications can work, but they usually dry your skin. They say acne will clear up if you stop eating oily or sugary foods. Toothpaste is a popular home remedy, too, but in the end, we just have to wait. Our bodies decide when we stop getting acne.

Listen to Amanda’s story about skin problems in this English lesson about acne.

Amanda:  Hey, Jeff. I just got back from the dermatologist. Turns out I have adult acne.

Jeff:  Really?

Amanda:  And I don’t really understand the difference between adolescent acne and adult acne except for the fact that I am this age now.

Jeff:  Did you have it when you were an adolescent going through puberty?

Amanda:  No, and I guess most people go through it in their teens. Right? It’s kind of a coming of age or rite of passage.

Jeff:  Are you going to start acting like an angry adolescent?

Amanda:  Perhaps it might go hand-in-hand.

Jeff:  It’s a bummer either way.

Amanda:  It really is. You have such perfect skin. You should probably not take that for granted, I should say.

Jeff:  I don’t know about that. Definitely went through that maybe kind of both in adolescence…

Amanda:  Since you went through it, do you have any suggestions of what I can use? Some home remedies? Something in my drawer at home?

Jeff:  Well, you’re already there. You went to the dermatologist. They can help you out.

Amanda:  You know what she told me to do? Put a paper bag over my face. Ouch.

Jeff:  Alright, go to a new dermatologist.

Amanda shares something personal with Jeff: She has adult acne. It sounds like Amanda didn’t get pimples as a teenager, but she definitely gets them now. Since she didn’t experience acne when she was younger, Amanda is looking for advice. She’s hoping that Jeff has the answers.

Jeff says that he got pimples when he was a teenager and even gets them today. Amanda finds that hard to believe since his skin seems so perfect. Jeff suggests that Amanda see a doctor who specializes in skin conditions: a dermatologist. Amanda jokes that her dermatologist’s advice was to put a bag over her face.

Unless you were really lucky growing up, you probably got acne as a teenager. How did acne affect you? Were you embarrassed by it, or were you OK with it? Did you ever try an unusual home remedy?

I wasn’t lucky growing up :p I had not a big problem with that like my friends but it irritates me because it happens even today-ocasionally, of course.

I’ve never have unusual home remedy. My only way is waiting until it passes :P

I remember when I was teenager, I had sometimes problems with acnes. I felt ashamed, it’s definitily not a good feelings. I avoided to hang out with my friends. Fortunately the acnes decrease, but sometimes I still have. But I don’t care anymore, bceause everybody has.

Well I got acne as a teenager. It used to be a huge embarrassment for me, though it wasn´t such severe acne. I tried many types of home remedy like tooth paste, splashing some type of tea on your face to remove excess of oil but actually none of that worked out and I just had to wait for my body to stop giving me acne.

as far as I remember it was never bothering for me.And I think paying much attention to it makes it worse.

Putting yogurt on face or rubbing the face with cucumber skin or potato skin can help as home remedies .
