Thanks Peyman for your compliments and feedback; “a rising tide lifts all boats!”

I also learned something from Paul’s Three Sisters article on Indian style gardening.

Continue to read the lessons and posts here, there’s information that you won’t get on other English websites.

Thanks Karavani for your feedback.  We can learn from various cultures and cultivate an understanding of why people do the things we do in a society.

I intend to write on my experiences growing up in the US which was quite different from those growing up in the US today.  This topic was suggested by Easypeasy

Can young people today imagine life without the computer, internet, cell phones, videos, gaming, etc.? How can that be?  Stay tuned for my “growing up” story!

Paul, “that’s what I’m talking about!” (phrase)

Thanks so much for your contribution and support, the knowledge grows and grows. After writing the article I found out my grandmother (who I was close to) was half Indian!

Now that you’ve mentioned it, I want to do further research on the “three sisters” method of gardening especially since I love gardening.

Please let us know how your “three sisters” garden turns out. Thanks again.

American English is the only kind I know so if you don’t mind, I’d like to share something. Mr. Alston’s recent and excellent summary of Native Americans got me interested enough to read up on them. You can find his summary in the Cultural forum and I encourage you to read it if you haven’t already.

I love gardening and found through reading that the natives had a kind of circle garden that they called the “three sisters” garden. You can probably find the layout online as I did, but the idea is that they grew corn, beans, and squash together in a group.

The beans climb the corn and support them, the spiny stalks of the squash varieties protected them. Additionally, the produce (corn, beans, and squash) compliment each other nutritionally, each making up for shortcoming in the other.

Finally, they each feed the other. In most garden beds, occasional rotation or soil additions are required to avoid depleting the soil of nutrients. Because the three sisters feed each other, Native Americans were able to employ the same garden plots for generations.

I have laid out my “three sisters garden” for the springtime, and I hope I’ve encouraged other gardeners to consider such a space. I can’t plant until spring, but if other gardeners are like me, winter is the time for planning next years effort.

Thanks again to Mr. Alston for provoking the interest that got me started on this.

Luhua, you asked a very good thought-provoking question. I will “weigh in” on it: New ideas can influence culture but there may be resistance from the status quo.

Stino, you’re welcome, glad you received your answer.

Jasonlongo welcome to the culture forum. Having information on a culture assists us in understanding the language because many words are directly related to what’s happening in the culture.

For example, you used the word “caved” which is a new popular word used in the US to describe a person or group “giving in” (quitting) something.

Thanks for taking the time to write, learning can be fun!

This forum about culture was really important for me ‘cause you know it’s important to know more about other culture.

Doesn’t sound right to be caved in one’s culture, we just have to put ourself right there and know about others.

I’d better travel for India, the US and more countries to discover.

Teacher I really back you up in what you’ve posted, that gives us learners that stamina to keep learning this language that is like a passion in us.

thank you !!!

Stino, there are several ways you can say it, one way is:

In the morning, I have to go to work.

It depends on the emphasis you are trying to communicate. Remember in English you can say the same thing in many ways. I hope this helps you.
