You’re cruising down the freeway when suddenly you see a long line of red lights ahead. You hit the brakes, your car stops, and you wait. And wait. And wait. You’re stuck in a traffic jam.

It’s nice to own a car, but planning trips around traffic can be tough. If you try to drive across town when everyone is leaving work, it will take twice as long. That’s why some people would rather ride bikes. They can avoid congested roads during rush hour and get exercise, too!

Find out how Amanda and Mason handle traffic in this English lesson.

Amanda:  Well, it took me 90 minutes to get here to meet you. That was fun.

Mason:  Seriously? How far do you drive?

Amanda:  Well, it was about 18 miles away, and I sat in rush hour traffic and went about 7 miles per hour.

Mason:  That is terrible. Don’t you get road rage doing that?

Amanda:  If it weren’t for music, I would probably lose it.

Mason:  That’s really why I ride my bike most of the time. Sometimes it takes me a little bit longer to get there, but in times like that, I’m going to get there faster than you and I’m going to feel like I did something positive along the way. I got a little exercise.

Amanda:  I completely agree, and I’m open to trying it. However, I don’t own a bike, I don’t know how to ride a bike, and I don’t know any of the rules.

Mason:  The big thing with the rules are you’ve got to be careful when it’s congested out, when there’s a lot of traffic. Basically never assume that you have the right of way. Always assume someone’s probably going to hit you. Not because they’re a bad person, just because they’re not paying attention.

Amanda:  Now are you one of those obnoxious, pushy bike riders?

Mason:  Absolutely not. Those people are the worst, and they give bike riding a bad name for all of us.

Amanda:  I agree. It makes me want to flip them off.

Mason:  Almost worse than being mad at other drivers because you might just do something to the poor guy on a bike.

Amanda:  The only thing that I dislike about being stuck in traffic is I find myself talking to myself all the time. And then you look over, and you see that someone’s been watching you. Embarrassing.

Mason:  Awesome.

Amanda tells Mason about the terrible traffic she was in. It seems pretty normal for her, though. She says listening to music helps keep her calm when she’s stuck in a long line of cars.

Mason likes to ride his bike everywhere. Not only does he avoid rush hour traffic, he also gets some exercise along the way.

Amanda would maybe ride a bike, too, if she had one. But she’d have to learn the rules of the road first. Mason says there are not many rules. Just watch out for all the cars!

Do you ride your bike or prefer to drive? What is traffic like where you live? Are there special rules for people on bikes?

It is crazy in my town at rush hours, even on weekend. I moved near office so i wouldn’t be trapped in the crazy congestion that would consume my time. When the cars were stopped (like the whole world stopped), i walked freely besides them. It’s funny sometimes. I don’t ride motorcycle because of several accidents in the past. I prefer to walk while doing sightseeing to boost the mood. Bike looks more convenient but seems dangerous still. The road has already too many motorcycles.

Well, one of the controvertial topics that people tend to talk about these days is driving, bad driving. Saddly it has been institutionalized for many drivers driving so. Unless I have to, I don’t drive with the actual motorists driving, but I normally drive and encounter bad drivers, mostly ladies and they get on my nerves, but I do my best to keep my temper nonetheless and sometimes I fail to do so!!! However, the city in which I live is not very big, actually it transcends the expectations negetively with regard to traffic, that is, the volume of its traffic is remarkablely high. At times, driving becomes so vapid following being stuck in the traffic jams that maybe walking would be a good alternative then!!! As well as that, when we juxtapose people not complying with the driving rules and the traffic jams, it turns into something which is hard to put up with. I do hope the authorities figure it out how to cope with this important obstacle for individuals’ daily lives.

Ia don’t really  like driving when going to work or maybe to school. In my country roads are so bad, bad, bad and bad, it doesn’t allow drivers to drive easily.

Way back I remember one day when I was going to school and by any chance I encoutered a terrible traffic, it took me more minutes I guess 30 minutes in the car, and when arriving at school I was so tired and didn’t want to study anymore.

rarely to see people riding bike to go to work nowadays. riding seems to be only just a kind of sports. for me, i drive to my office everyday. being stuck in rush hour traffic is ordinary and i get used to this. i rarely changed my lane to overtake a car when the road was almost congested and i believe what i did is positive along the road.

I would prefer bike because i stay 5km away from my office . If i follow the normal rules of traffic or going by car . It would gonna takes more than 1/2hr to reach my office . but in bike it takes 10 min . so i would prefer bike rather than car. And yes you’ve to be carefull for other cars while riding .

The other day I need to leave early one hour from work. Oh, my I’d better not. The traffic was horrible. All lights were mine. It took me instead of 10 min of the usual time, 40 minute of drive. The place where I live, the road consctructions are always the reason of traffic. Accidents and with them rubbernecking cause traffic. I always try not to gawk. I myself was in an accident and I didn’t like when people were staring at me. I wanted to vanish into the air from their gawking. Another very serious and dangerous reason might be the weather that make slippery and treacherous roads and a congested traffic with many vehicles spinning and flying of the road. That’s what is happening in Calgary now. It’s always better to take your time and slow down in this case and be always conscious on the road, even by talking to yourself, waking yourself up.

In general I’m a cautious driver. I used to drive neurotically until rammed into one car and it caused me a heck of a lot of money and health. Now I’m more or less relaxed to drive with the flow but, never dragging behind. I also take it easy someone’s bizarre driving like super slow driving, 20-30 km/h less the speed limit. I also never flip the driver off… You never know who sits behind the wheel and what to expect from a person, so I don’t provoke. The most dangerous situation for me is when somemone doesn’t see you in a blind sport and just driving towards you to change lanes. By instinct, you either honk which might be late or swirve to the side but there might be an oncoming traffic. So, it’s quite dangerous.

About bikers, I always change lanes when I see them on the road and look right when doing the right turn. Riding a bike is a mystery to me. Never biked :) I’m wondering how they keep balance. That would be the best execize for me.

I prefer to drive when go to work. As you konw, the air in Chinese city is badddddddd. And another point is that if you ride on a road, dangerous.``

Fortunately,The traffic is not so congested in my city-Foshan,Guangdong. Most bike riders in my city, they don’t ride to work. But they ride at night or at the weekend for fun. Nice.

There aren’t any special rules for the bikers in my city.As Mason said,u need to watch out of all the cars!``Now in China, the electric bikecycles or electric motobikes r very popular and convenient fro people to go out….But it’s said that some rules r coming out for them..

Shanghai is so congested that a driver almost hasn’t the chance to enjoy a cruising.  And if you are in the rush hour, you will see the road full of cars, the traffic lights switch to green but you are still there. When  the line moves ,you  might become peaceful and calm , but a sudden cut in line make you get road rage again !
